Bama's Biggest Recruiting Miss Number Two
2. 2005- Fred "OJ Simpson" "Terrell Owens" Rouse-
Where to begin with this character. As a Bama fan in 2005 following recruiting, we were new to the scene of being on big time prospects lists. After all, since I had started following recruiting in 2001 we had been on probation and didn't have much to crow about. It was in a sense like pulling teeth to get a big guy on campus. But in 2005 we were no longer hindered by scholarship limitations and had free range to go out and recruit. Our class started off about like you would expect, 3 stars and a few 4 stars. So when later in the year an article popped up on a certain site that said the top WR in the nation was planning an official visit to Bama, it was HUGE news.
After hearing the news, BOL subscribers rushed to the RIvals database to pull up his profile and watch film on the highest prospect we were going to have campus since Brodie Croyle in 2001. But as soon as it came up and the name Lincoln High School was below his name, the air went out. Basically, it you went to Lincoln High School and FSU wanted you, you went to FSU. Even at the last minute, if they offered late, you went to FSU (see Seddrick Holloway). But even though our chances were not great, people still asked about him 5 times a day on BOL. "Anything new on Fred Rouse" "Do we have a shot"
Fast forward a bit to the Army All American game in which Fred was playing in. More than a few rumors about Fred were going around. Some about how FSU's offensive woes were weighing heavily on his mind, so he might be headed to Miami. Some said others had talked him into getting out of Florida and heading to Texas to play for the Longhorns. FSU, Miami, and UT posters on the Mainboard argued and fought like rabid dogs over who had the lead for MR/ Rouse and the Bama posters (all five of us back then) were content for the moment just to get mentioned by the five star. Other rumors of a much less flattering nature continued to spread about how two of Fred's roommates at the AA Game wanted to change rooms. After the second asked, it was looked into and the word was Fred had more pot in his room than a Jamaican in Miami. It was never proven as far as I know, and he was allowed to play. And play he did. After one reception, Fred knowing the cameras would be on him, held up a Hook'Um horns gesture turning the MB into WW3 and Texas fans running amuck. Good times were had by all.....except FSU fans
So a little while later, UT accepted a commitment from WR Quan Crosby and pulled Fred's offer. Some say it was because of the weed rumors and some say they just did not want to wait on him in typical Mack Brown fashion. S that leaves 3, Miami, FSU, and Bama. But almost as soon as the news broke about UT yanking his offer, news came out about Miami doing the same. They did not receive another commitment, they just pulled it and never gave any reasons. I think we can all speculate. So now, that leaves Bama and FSU. FSU fans crowed on the MB like they had won a NC. No way in hell was Bama going to take a 5 star WR, a Lincoln High School player, away from then. Shit was over, Fred was soon compared by many Nole fans as what you would get whn you took Randy Moss and Jerry Rice, out them together, and have them better speed. Typical FSU fashion.....BEST. PLAYER.EVER. TO PLAY.FOOTBALL.
The night before his announcement, every single BOL subscriber was online (yes we had a few even back then) discussing Rouse when news came out that his mother did not want him to stay instate and sign with FSU. HUGE would not describe it. But most still braced and tempered their expectations. After learning where he was announcing, infront of his high school in an auditorium, most knew it was over. There was no way a guy with a bigger ego than Terrell Owens was going into a gym with a thousand people telling them what they did not want to hear....I'm going to Bama. So without further ado, he stepped up, and told the masses he was going to FSU to a resounding cheer. I was in college and skipping my early class to monitor it on the Internet. Yep, I was that guy.
Fred went to FSU, but did not last. In fact, he was one of the most controversial players I have ever seen in college football. He screamed at the coaches on the sidelines to get him the ball (just like TO did), even though he was buried on the depth chart. They seldom even let this cancer of a player on the field. But did Fred stop there? Hell no....
So FSU makes it to the Orange Bowl to play Penn State. After hearing all month how Fred had changed his ways and was falling in line, he got to play. So during one play, Fred breaks open on a hitch and go, is wide open, and the FSU QB makes a poor throw and misses him. So what does Fred do? Does he go back to the huddle? Does he head back to the sidelines? Kinda. He heads over to the Penn State sideline and pouts refusing to stay on the same side with his team, FSU. Unbelievable. Everyone was in shock....but he's not done
So after embarrassing himself on national TV, Fred gets the bright idea for him and a fellow player to go rob a fellow player Lorenzo Booker of his stereo equipment. They break in a window and grab the stuff. When the cops show up what do they find? A bloody glove like OJ? No, but close. They find a FSU WR glove, one of which Fred had written his name inside. Ouch. Busted. So looking back, I guess we were lucky not to get him, and Miami and UT knew what they were doing. Sometimes no matter how much talent a guy has, it's just not worth the cancer he will be in the locker room.

I was living in Tallahassee at this time. My roommate had a WC sub and when we found out about Fred we went to 2 of his games. He didn't go to lincoln but another HS in town, it was a school near french town(the ghetto). But he was an amazing player, he just didn't get it. I think he ended up at UTEP, and sucked it up there. This was pre Terry Bowden at North Ala or he would have landed there like all the other FSU washouts.

Don't know why folks are upset. From everything I've always heard these things are true and even far more.
FSU took a chance on him. Everyone would have, Texas pulling their offer because of weed? That's a 20 minute comedy routine waiting to happen.
He was an absolute phenom and we landed him. Hell yeah we were pumped. When the kid is on your team you are ALWAYS going to think he will slowly mature, make plays while he grows in accountability, and then as a Jr finally turn the corner and ball out then go pro. He was just that dumb and insane.
He was nowhere near as bad as Randy though. Same story but to a higher degree (pun intended)

I was never hating. Everything yall have posted were things I wanted to imply but simply do not give enough of a damn to explain myself. I do fail to see why someone would bring up a player from close to 6 years ago that was kicked off of our team. Especially considering said persons own team should demand this portion of their attention. But hey Im just an idiot in terms of message boards, apparently. This is almost as bad as me bringing up Bama's one week coach Mike Price getting fired for paying strippers on company money. Neither are relevant. However, I do see why he could hate FSU fans, he just does not know how bad miami fans will get if they ever sniff the top again. In short; am confused by logic behind post to an extent and would like to know more of what instigated it. And oh yeah, hope LSU murders Bama.
