So I just got through watching The Mist (2007) and noticed three cast members that also play in The Walking Dead. Interesting enough so I googled and here's what I found.

yeah that seems like a plothole. If they are already infected then why do they turn when they get bit or scratched? Why wouldn't they either be turned right away or only when killed by the walkers. Obviously the infection itself doesn't kill them.

The bite or scratch kills them like a bad snake bite would but much worse
After they die they come back.
Remember when they watched the study in the lab season 1. She died for a second then came back.

They have to die first before they can become reanimated. When they get bit or scratched the effects are like that of a snake bite or other poisonous animal (a second infection if you will). This kills the host and then they become reanimated.
