The end of tackle football draws even closer

Brain scans performed on five former NFL players revealed images of the protein that causes football-related brain damage -- the first time researchers have identified signs of the crippling disease in living players.

  • It's actually making the game unwatchable IMO. Helmet to helmet, defenseless receiver, accidentally touching a QB...screw these candyass rules and bring back REAL football.

    Agreed, but LOL at "candyass".

  • its all bs and double standards. the offensive player can lower his head all day long but as soon as the defensive guy does it its a flag. if you are gonna call leading with the head, then call it on both sides. and if QB's dont wanna get hit let em take of the pads and helmets and give em a baseball glove

  • I don't mind the defenseless receiver and helmet to helmets rule but the barely tapping the QB's facemask rule needs to go

  • This is all so fucking stupid. Why does it matter if they are getting hurt? We all know the risks, that's why they all make millions. I mean, UFC is a sport and those guys get knocked out cold, choked out, knees torn apart, ext...you don't see Dana White making them wear more pads or any of this bullshit.

No kidding. Plus they're getting punched in the head constantly. They should do some research on cte in boxers' brains.

They have, its why boxing in this cuntry is on life support

The talent pool dried up as more and more parents said no way my son is becoming a boxer, football will suffer the same fate

I don't necessarily think that's the case because there's an influx of MMA fighters now, I think that people are boxing because theyre getting into MMA

MMA has always been around and the only difference is now its a bit more popular... but not really in terms of kids choosing it over football or baseball for example

MMA gyms are far too expensive for the majority of kids and literally all of them don't allow full contact sparring until at least 14

Also MMA and Boxing draw interest from the entire world

Boxing was never like this really back in the day, kids started sparring almost right away no matter the age

Also MMA will never have a mainstream following like football, or how boxing used to be in this country

Boxing used to be americas #1 sport, now its football.... MMA will never be that popular imo

Also the NFL hasn't had its Muhammed Ali moment yet, once a powerful hero like say Tom Brady or whoever gets are brain dead and shit, then it will send shockwaves through america and the talent pool will start to slowly dry up, then the level of play and entertainment falters and boom, interest from fans is all that is left to wither away

It will take longer than boxing but it will happen imo, football is a dying sport... period, it might not die until 2045... but its death is coming

Football is incredibly dangerous and players aren't gonna stop getting bigger, faster and stronger anytime soon if ever

  • That hit with Pollard on Stephan Ridley out to show you just how bad it is getting. The following day every single sports show was debating on whether that was a dirty hit or not. I'm sitting back thinking, WTF do you mean dirty. It was a running back running the damn ball into a safety. The running back lowered his head to thump the safety and it was helmet to helmet.

Since when did hitting a RB that lowers his helmet coming into a defender call for anything other than the defensive player to return the favor? If you actually look at that hit, it was dirtier on Stephen Ridley because he dropped the crown of his helmet going after Pollard. Pretty sure that Ridley weighs more than him.

Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now.

MMA may never get as big as the NFL is now, but I'm not ready to say for sure it won't yet.

They've already been picked up by FOX (UFC, that is) and they are using one of the NFL announcers (I forget his name), the NFL robot things, and the music that is nearly identical to the NFL music.

UFC has grown exponentially in the past few years and doesn't look like it's slowing down.

And the most important factor, UFC has an owner (Dana White) who is not only business savvy (or at least thats the impression I've gotten), but he LOVES MMA and wants to improve the product/sport, not focus on profits.

    Thats all IMO tho.

The rise comes before the fall my friend, and nothing lasts forever

Lolz at Dana White caring more about the sport than money, he might lead to believe that but its not true

Plus Dana is way too hands on and isn't immune to mistakes either, he has been lucky so far imo

Also even in this boom of MMA popularity, it still doesn't even come close to the paper view sales of non heavyweight boxing matches, think about that ?
