The implosion of SEC Basketball

Basketball is just to fill the gap between football, baseball, and spring practice. College basketball everywhere is down IMHO. For some reason, I can't name one superstar out there right now.

Compare the league RPIs and SOS from 2003-2004 to 2012-2013. Incredible.

Mirror image of B1G football, IMO. Sucks that SEC basketball has gotten this bad.

Of course, one thing that SEC basketball has going over B1G football is that going back 10 years, the SEC, ACC, and Big East all have 3 National Championships in the sport. Going back 10 years in B1G football, there is nothing to speak for it.

Well, over the last 18 years, the SEC has won a third of the NCAA tournaments over that time which is more that any other conference. I know 6 isn't quite the same as 10 in football over that period, but it's not bad.

This year is historically bad though. If for some reason Alabama is able to win at Florida, you could have a mirror image of what happened in the PAC12 last season with the regular season champion not even making the field.

Note: It is obsurd that as awful as Bama has been this year that we are even in position to sniff a game to decide the league. It's just.......really bad.

November 14th, 2009: The day basketball officially died in the SEC.

Cornell beat UMass, Davidson, St Johns, Temple and Wisconsin that year and went to the Sweet 16. We were playing our first game under a new head coach.

Nowhere near as bad a loss as others we've had the last 10 years

    Meh.

Bama's taken advantage and sitting at 2nd in the league for 2nd time in 3 years.

And could end up not making the tournament either of those years because of those RPI numbers that I showed in my initial post.

So really, we are a prime example of the downfall of the league. Team comes in 2nd in regular season and goes 12-4/14-4 and is squarely on the bubble or not in the tournament? Didn't happen in the early 2000s.

League was consistently ranked in the Top 3 of the RPI and sending 5-7 teams to the NCAA tournament every year in the early 2000s. It was a solid basketball league.

  • I guess Kentucky's always been good overall. Florida has had its moments. Arkansas was good in the 90's when they had that chubby center(forget his name). Missouri is on and off. Tennessee hasn't done anything in years. Am I missing a team? I just don't see the SEC matching the ovrrall production of the Big East, ACC and Big10. I just don't ever remember thinking the SEC had the most explosive conference in bball.

In a time long long ago we actually won games out of conference and sent many teams to the NCAA Tournament.

LOL old timer. I don't believe that for a second.

Being a PAC guy, here's one way to look at it.

The PAC has 2 titles since 1976.

The SEC has 2 since 2007.

This year, the only conference that is any good overall is the B1G, IMO.

  • funny how even though its gotten ugly in ten years, the SEC still is tied for most national championships...

we might suck as a whole, but the top teams still win.

  • Give South Carolina a few years and I think we will be a consistent tournament team. Theres a ton of talent instate the next few years and we finally have a coach worth his salt
