The next great young hockey player?

  • Connor McDavid may be it. I know we don't talk about hockey much on here, but TSN did a feature on this kid last night to follow up on the original one they did in the summer. He's the third player to get exceptional player status to play at 15 by the CHF. The other two players...Sidney Crosby and John Tavares. He was selected #1 in the OHL draft and this season he already has 12 goals, 15 assists in 21 games this season and is tied for 17th in points. He's not eligible for the NHL draft until 2015, but for all the hockey fans out there this kid is one to watch.

  • There's not a lot of highlights out there yet, but here's one.

    Play

Connor McDavid scores a great goal against...

15 year old Connor McDavid steals the puck from Nikolai Goldobin, dekes around Phoenix 1st round pick Connor Murphy, and evades a poke check from San Jose prospect JP Anderson for his seventh goal of the season.

Kid has looked like the real deal in that league so far. Just looking at the numbers though, looks like he is closer to Tavares as a comparable right now then Crosby. Q is often a little higher scoring though so that explains a little of the difference. Either way though, this kid has to be the early favorite for the top pick in a few years.

    McDavid
    1.29 pts/game

    Crosby
    2003–04 Rimouski Océanic QMJHL 59 54 81 135 74
    2.29 pts/game

    Tavares
    2005–06 Oshawa Generals OHL 65 45 32 77 -13 72
    1.18 pts/game

Agreed that the numbers say more like Tavares, but from watching a couple of his games he plays a lot more like Crosby. He's very physical for his size and like to take the puck right to the net. He's got great lower body strength and balance which makes Crosby so great. Right now he's also a better passer than scorer and he's got a good frame. It's still really early in his career and while I seriously doubt he ends up as good as Crosby that's who he reminds me more of right now between the two.
