Ooh...look at the liar with vast psychic powers.

You see people coming in with Food Stamps? Where?

Don't bury your head in the sand. I work in the inner-city Houston school system. More than 80% of the families I work with are on welfare or food stamps and more than 90% receive medicaid. I'd say 8 out of 10 times when I meet with a family, they drive a nicer car then I do.

A quick anecdote. I am a nutritionist and exercise physiologist who specializes in childhood obesity. Just a few weeks after starting my job I met with a family who was on public assistance and had a 100+lbs 6yr old who had just been diagnosed with type II diabetes. The mother drove to the meeting in a late model escalade with 24" rims. I had spent quite a bit of time designing a meal plan for the child, showed her how it was actually cheaper then the diabetes medication the doctor wanted to put her 6yr old on, and the mother flat out said she couldn't afford it. It was cheaper than the medication and they received food stamps, but somehow they could not afford it. I calmly asked her how much the rims on her truck costed. She stormed out, told the principal, and I was nearly fired.

I love my job. I love the communities that I work with, but ask anybody who works in low socioeconomic areas and you'll get the exact same response. Our system of welfare is ass-backwards, it does not in any way encourage people to be self-sufficient and there are virtually no safeguards against people milking it. Whether you like it or not, there is a significant percentage who feel they are entitled to "stuff" without having to work for it and have zero intention of ever getting off.

Once again, a truly outstanding example. I applaud you for asking her that(Even if neither she nor the principle thought it was very professional lol)

I'd much rather him be unprofessional and maybe help that kid than be professional and let that bitxh get him fat enough that he doesn't have a chance.

  • You know the thing that gets me? These people abusing welfare aren't out there living in mansions or anything. They're perfectly content getting free money to live in POS neighborhoods with drug dealers. WTF is wrong with people?

Enforced service is the way around this. It would give young people a wake up call and also help the obesity epidemic.

Thanks but no thanks. I would rather not be forced into doing anything.

You guys seem like cool, level-headed gents, so it really wasn't directed at y'all. A friend of mine and I just had a good discussion about this (he's getting his Masters in Finance) about how a lot of people look down on people who got successful with their brain but laud people who did so with their brawn. Think about how many people dog people like Bill Gates but who love guys like Peyton Manning. Now, they might say that athletes shouldn't get paid as much, but it's usually not directed at specific players. And as FT said, this world needs doctors and designers, too. As long as you strive to be the best at your field, you're helping this great country. That's how I feel about it.

As someone who actually LIVED in those type of communities, that is by far a load of crap.

In fact I was say for every one bad apple, there are three people that actually use it correctly.

It's a legitimate point. Think about websites where you get to review services or products. If you hate the product, will you go on there and give them sh!t? Hell yes you will. What if you love it? Not as likely; you enjoy it and you go on your merry way. The media has a habit of only giving us bad news, never the good stories.

Haha, well, maybe where you are from that is true. In the south that just isn't the case. At least for my town in AL.

Exactly, you never hear about the families who are really struggling and still barely survive with the help and even then sometimes not even get help, but you always hear about that ONE person (out of hundreds to visit a grocery store with foot stamps) that has a nice phone/car.

NO is very bad in some places. Even I don't go to some places at dark. People might say black people aren't the problem but down here they are. Call me racist all you want but every night people got shot, killed, beaten, and it's always young black males

    Can you prove it though?

And how exactly do you know people have food stamps?

Most states now have them loaded on a card and it is rung up as a debit card, so it's not like it is paper bills anymore like it used to be, and very hard to tell unless you know exactly what to look for. You also cannot even buy hot foods with them, so people cannot buy hot seafood like you said. It will cancel the transaction until the hot foods are taken off the order (I used to be a cashier at a grocery store).

Well, I have been wrong before, but they do abuse it in other ways. That is almost against the point though, the point is that it needs to be more heavily regulated. Mandatory drug tests and such.

It's a blue card that says Louisiana Purchase in white on the top with a yellow Louisiana on the bottom right corner, and has black numbers. Down here you can buy food raw seafood or cooked searood at seafood shops, hot plates at grocery store, I have no idea. You obviously have not been down here or stayed for a long period of time.

The 10th of every month Walmart is full of people buying groceries and you can see the vehicles in the parking lot. Usually a lot of nice ones, funny thing is the 10th is when people get their food stamp money credited to their card. Walmart literally runs out of groceries from people, I've been I know. If you want groceries go before the 10th or a week after, never that day or the week after, there will not be anything to buy.

So please don't talk down on me or act like I don't know what I'm talken about. I don't lie to make a point
