Thorpe Award Discussion

I see your point, but I think that's slightly less applicable to a safety, particularly one who's used in so many ways like Thomas is.

I'm not really using that to argue against the Fresno guy, I just like the idea of taking the overall effect a guy has into consideration.

Yeah, I know that, was just throwing my $.02 out there. Kinda interesting how different a safety's role can be from that of a CB, makes me wish there was a separate award for the 2 different positions.

Would've voted Milliner by a mile until the Texas A&M game. He was simply embarrassed by them. Coincidentally, he hasn't been impressive in either of their games against ranked opponents this season.

Had an amazing game against Michigan. They're ranked.

He hasn't been perfect but he's had a great year. He'll probably win the Thorpe and be a 1st rounder in next year's draft. Really improved since he was thrown in the fire as a true frosh in 2010. Took some lumps that year but it has helped make him one of the best now.

Although he did get away with pass interference against Michigan on the interception, let's not overrate them.

Their QB is a terrible passer, they're 8-3 with two blowout losses, they haven't beaten a ranked team all year, and they have yet to play 11-0 Ohio State.

Do you see how ridiculous it sounds when you're flaunting him by referencing the first game of the season against the (at-best) 3rd best team in the B1G?

Denard Robinson is averaging less than 150 yards passing per game. He's awful.

That probably means he'll have a hell of a game on Satuday. coffee

  • Im gonna laugh when Jonathan banks wins. His number aren't as impressive because teams don't throw his way much. He has only been beat bad 1 time all year when he wasn't but about 80%

He was anally abused against Alabama.

Yup Ifo's a beast. The finalists are all going to the nfl next year. Ifo still has two more years. He'll be a finalist next year and the following year especially if he keeps progressing which I think he will. He jumped leaps and bounds from his freshmen year to his sophmore year. He'll be a future 1st or 2nd rounder in the draft. So will Mitchell imo.

Not sure why that's so hilariously with the success of Byrd and Chung in the NFL, Ifo is very much in that style of player. Plays with a physicality, one of the surest tacklers I've ever seen (the reasons he has 6 FFs this year), and his coverage skills will continue to improve. Not calling him a certain round pick at this point he's only a true sophomore this year but I'll be surprised if he doesn't end up going pro.

I myself am not sure of Mitchell, its harder to tell because QBs have been targeting Ifo more this year. He was seen as the better CB, but I've always thought Ifo would end up better and that seems to be the case now IMO.

    Milliner, Alabama (through 10 games)
    2 INT
    28 solo, 17 ast
    4.0 TFL
    1.5 sacks
    FF
    14 PBU

Thomas, Fresno State (through 11 games)
    8 INT (3TD)
    58 solo, 15 ast
    10.5 TFL
    3.0 sacks
    3 FF
    4 PBU

Banks, Miss State (through 11 games)
    4 INT
    34 solo, 22 ast
    2 TFL
    FF
    6 PBU

    ——————————————

This Thomas kid has insane stats. Personally I think PBU is the most important statistic, so I think that is huge for Milliner. How do y'all think this plays out?

Fresno St. kid is owning ^^^this discussion. I'd be willing to bet he has faced much better passing teams too. We all know the SEC passing game is behind the 8 ball, not counting A&M. Bama was torched by A&M and LSU. Fresno St. kid wins, congrats to him.

aTm: Season high 10 tackles, .5 sack, 1 PD
LSU: 8 tackles*, season high 2 TFLs

    *second highest for the season

Don't think that's coincidence. A&M and LSU threw all over Bama. Obviously he was a busy man trying to tackle their WR's. How many times was Millner tested against those 2 teams and how many were completed for how many yards? Please list drops by receivers too.

That's why 25% of his tackles in the LSU were TFL. I guess he got beat so hard the dude went back behind the LOS for fun. Come on now. Alabama blitzes DBs like crazy.

By the way, Banks is so much better he is projected as the first DB picked and sixth overall...oh wait...no. That's Dee.

We've already discussed his draft status. Won't be top 6, maybe 10th at best. Unless you are a complete shutdown CB you aren't getting drafted top 8..

  • Star:

I wouldn't even know where to look except to rewatching and do my own statistics to find drop balls and receiver yardage.

If you noticed by the way the number of TFLs and sacks in those high-tackle games, you'd see that blitzing is a part of our defense. I'm not saying he didn't have to go tackle a recorder that beat Fulton like he stole something, but just because LSU and aTm had a lot of passing yards, that doesn't necessarily mean they were on Milliner.

Also, Milliner is, without a doubt, the best CB in this draft class and the best CB in football. After he balls out the next three games and then puts stupid numbers at the combine, he will easily be a Top 8 pick, maybe higher depending on team need.
