Tipping at Sub sandwhich shops

  • If they make minimum wage, I don't tip them (this includes Subway workers).

Makes no sense.... if they aren't making enough money, build the tip into the menu prices. Hardly anybody tips at those kind of places, nor should they because they are already making a lot of money on your transaction. The people that work at these places need to complain to their employer about not making enough money.... why should patrons be responsible for compensating them for the work they do for the employer?

With that said, nothing wrong with tipping someone who deserves it... I don't tip unless I'm eating at the place.

Here's the one I always feel uneasy about (and it may have already been discussed here)..... do you tip on take out?

EDIT: This is about ALL types of food, not just sub shops. There is a decent restaurant right around the corner that serves a variety of food and does pick up. Not fast food, pizza or sub shop.

  • Hellllll no! If I'm going there to get it, I don't tip. If they deliver, I tip 10%-15%. The only places I go where I tip people are:
the bar (so I can keep getting drinks) when I get my haircut (so they don't give me a chop job) and at restaurants.

I used to deliver hot tubs for a living. Horrible job, minimum wage. I did that for a year, 3 houses a day. I think I got 3 tips TOTAL. If you want to see how much people really tip, work at a delivery job for a week. That's what made me draw back on my tipping. Some people are complete assholes and think they are entitled to delivery services.

No I don't tip on take-out generally... unless it is one of the carside to go places and they actually bring it out to me. I don't tip if I have to drive to the place, walk in and pick up my food. What is the tip for at that point? I know the workers aren't paid very much, but that is something they should take up with the establishment and the people making all of the money, not the patron.

I will tip at a place if I frequently go there and become friendly with the workers and they slide me extra stuff at times... then a tip is in order... a tip for a special service. No special service, no tip.

  • Absolutely not.

I only tip if you're providing a servive, i.e. waiting on me, curb side service, delivery, etc.

    Here's a typical salary for a doctor....

    Med 1 - $0 Med 2 - $0 Med 3 - $0 Med 4 - $0 Intern - $40,000 Residency - $42,000 Residency - $44,000 Residency - $50,000 Fellowship - $60,000 Fellowship - $60,000 Fellowship - $60,000

That puts a freaking doctor in their early 30's making only $60K.

Interesting info. Also, way to kill it in this thread.

  • Why would anyone tip somebody at a sub shop?

    I'm very confused by this.
Making my sandwich is what they're paid to do. So my buying a sandwich and keeping their store in business is my way of tipping.

And I worked at a sandwich shop in college. Unless you deliver, you do not deserve a tip for working at Jimmy John's or Jersey Mike's.
