I loved Johnson as a prospect but he's even admitted the transition has been a challenge and he's currently 2nd string on the LSU Depth Chart.

Last year but he's a sure fire starter this year.

Slow your roll bro. Mathieu is a proven playmaker on defense and he is an elite punt returner as well.

    I have some awesome foresight.

    LOL....I hope you are correct.

Jabrill Peppers...More I watch, the more I'm convinced he is the best player in the 2014 class. Barring injury, he will do special things.

Mathieu is an All-American at 2 positions.

  • Matheiu changed games for us.

People just don't like him and he makes so many plays it seems to get a bit diluted.

He already has the NCAA record for most forced fumbles... Returns kicks and believe it or not, word out of camp is get gained some muscle and is locked everyone down.

People just love to put down great players.

The mnc game he allowed 2 passes on absolutely perfect throws and everyone says he sucks.

    Gotta love cfb fans

    good return guy ? yes
and he doesnt suck on D, he's simply a midget corner .

not sure peeps dislike him its just many realize he's over-hyped as a defender.

this^^^^^^^^ a playmaker but not elite CB. Claiborne was the best corner on that defense and in the country but didn't get as much love as Matheiu. Claiborne ended up getting the rewards though.

He's a nickle back.. Not a cover corner.

Thats the misconception people have. He makes plays off of the ball.

Yep, and it hurts to say it but our fanbase has been looking for the next Reggie since '05. That was him and he slipped away.

He won't be as good because he doesn't have Reggie's size but pretty damn close.

    Offense

Sammy Watkins Jr- Clemson Marquis Lee- USC De'Atngony Thomas- Oregon Cyrus Kouandijo- Alabama Malcolm Brown- Texas

Don't sleep on Sean Mannion at Oregon St though.

    Defense

Jadaveon Clowney- South Carolina Anthony Johnson- LSU Quandre Diggs- Texas Timmy Jernigan- FSU John Shirley- Washington

I'm a little late, but thank you for your rationality not totally leaving UT players off this list like others have. Actually the only thing I might not agree with your list is instead of Malcolm Brown, I might put Joe Bergeron. I stress might because both are very good. However, Bergeron has looked incredible from spring reports and I don't think any UT fan would be suprised if he was the better of the two this season. He looks and runs like a grown man.

I do what I can. I still think Malcolm was the best freshman back last year. The QB situation hurt him as much as anyone on the team, IMO. Diggs is just unreal and I think people just forgot he was just a freshman.

  • I'll interpret that as a knock on me putting Braxton Miller at the top of my list (or being smart enough to include him on it altogether). He was 75% of Ohio State's offense and 95% of it's gamebreaking capabilities. As a true freshman. Now he'll be playing in an Urban Meyer offense. Do the math. He was more important to his team than any freshman in the nation last year. He'll never dazzle NFL scouts with his passing, but he's more of a game changer than you give him credit for.

Not knocking Braxton, but it was who are the best So. for 2012, not who was the most important as freshmen.

I would still say that Sammy Watkins Jr was more important to his team as a freshman than Braxton was. I would also include Marquis Lee, Quandre Diggs, Isaiah Crowell, and possibly De'Anthony Thomas as freshmen that were more important to their team than Braxton.

Braxton did as good as one could have expected I suppose, but would Ohio St really been much worse than 6-7 with someone else at QB? I think it was more of a situation where no one was better than him, so they might as well develop the youth more so than he was definitely the best option.

Again, he should have a solid career, I just don't think he is in that category yet. Most of the players listed are amongst the best at their position regardless of age. You can't say that about Braxton yet.

  • While he's not top-5 by any means, I think Blake Countess is going to be something special. Total homer pick, but the guy stepped in as a true freshman and turned a secondary with huge holes into a strength. I really look forward to what he can do in the next three years, and I think he'll go down as one of Michigan's best CBs ever.

Yup. He shown quite a few flashes last year in his true freshman year. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing his progress from year 1 to year 2.

    Cool story.

Lee and Watkins had more yards receiving than he had passing. Doesn't belong anywhere near the top 5, much less #1.
