Top 5 next year

They lose some solid players, but return a lot of key groups as well. They have some senior playmakers for sure, but a lot of quality young depth as well.

Lose Riddick and Woods at RB, but Atkinson III has looked really good at times and returns.

Golson and Reese return at QB.

2 top WRs (Jones and Daniels) return, but Eifert is gone.

Only OL returning will be their RT, but they have some good depth that may be better at least at the guard position in the future, IMO.

6 of their top 9 LBers return, but Te'o and Fox are gone.

Only lose Lewis-Moore along the DL and return 2 of the best in the country in Tuitt and Nix, which is why most would say they could still be very good.

Return everyone except Motta in the secondary.

At the moment, I think top 10 is warranted. That could change after Monday though. A good showing and even a win against Bama could solidify that thinking, but a poor showing could also point to things not being what they have appeared this year also. Anywhere from 5-15 shouldn't be an alarming ranking for Notre Dame next season. I would assume Brian Kelly would just assume everyone think that they are a borderline top 25 team again.

Good analysis with just a couple of corrections. Both Martin and Watt have stated they want to return for a 5th year on the Oline. Cierre Woods has not stated he is leaving but most think he will enter the draft. Both Fox and Calabrese have another year at MLB if ND decides to give one or both another year. Former starting safety Slaughter could receive a medical redshirt and return as well.

    Agree with you on BK.

If Chip leaves, they aren't a top 5 team.

When/if he leaves Oregon will still be a top 5 team.

LSU is only losing 10 players off their three deep. Three of those are juniors who are leaving for the NFL (Minter, Montgomery, and Mingo).

I think LSU definitely has strengths returning. I know I don't have them in my top 10 at the moment, but that may also be from a bad taste I have in my mouth from their game against Clemson.

I just find it hard to rank a team that high that one can count on coaching screwing them out of a game at some point in the season. Miles will keep having 10 win seasons as long as he stays there and they are willing to keep him, but until he turns the offense over to someone capable of making decisions based on their strengths, there will always be that game or 2 every year that they lose because of awful playcalling when they shouldn't.

I fixed the OL in my edit. I forgot about the awarding of the 5th year at the end.

If he wasn't the OC, I would agree. However, the HC/OC is the only reason they are who they are.

Losing Cave will definitely hurt, Golic not so much.

  • For everyone so high on Stanford, why do you feel that way. For one, their showing against an average at best Wisconsin team makes me wonder.

Also, they lose 80% of their carries from the RB position, 88% of their receiving yards, 6 of their top 9 tacklers, 6 of their top 7 tacklers behind the LOS, and 8 of their top 9 sack guys.

For a team that relied on their running game, TE's, and front 7, they are just about all gone completely.

I like them a lot and think the program is in great shape, but I think next year could be a bit of a growing year for them as well.

I agree. The depth behind Golic has a chance to be much better. He was just an experienced guy that wasn't going to make mental mistakes and with the talent around him, he would be exposed that often.

Plus, I am sure the name Golic is a tough one to sit on the bench if there is any question at all that he could play.

True, can't really account for Les and his moronic coaching.

Honestly, you could throw Bama, UF, LSU, Stanford, Oregon (with Chip), and OSU in a hat. All of those teams, with ND potentially, could be top 5 caliber.

I think Stanford is heading in the right direction, but look at all they lose this year. Just about thier entire porduction on offense and almost their entire front 7, including 10 off the 2 deep in that category.

This was the perfect storm for them and I think they warrant a ranking at the bottom of the top 10, but they could be a team that falls off for a year as well. Definitely don't see them as a BCS title contender at all.

Right, that makes a lot of sense. Esp since LSU barely beat auburn, Towson (correction it was 38-22), Arkansas and Mississippi, and just lost to Clemson. They better get a better offense if they are gonna win there big games next year. Beat dat ass, you sound like a moron.

Florida has a great defense, but they also need to get a lot better at passing if they are gonna do it next year.

Bama is a great team, but had trouble against the spread. Will they be better against it next year? I don't know, but o think they will blow out the buckeyes next year is a pipe dream.

Did any SEC teams blow out big ten teams yesterday???? No. Michigan blew it against USC, and Nebraska was in it all game against Georgia. We beat Michigan by 5 and it could have been much worse. We beat braska 63-35 this year.....

bama is the 5th youngest team in the bcs...reloading and winning titles while doing it.

    Troof.

Stanford will retain some beef, and their QB looks legit but I'd fall over dead if they come out of the gate smoking next season. Who knows where they will be ranked to start, but their only hope of being in the top 5 come October is the craptastic Pac-12.
