I live in the deep South and that is what you hear all the time - that USC is the dirtiest program in the country. Conduct a poll and you'll find that will be the consensus opinion.
And while yes my number was way off, the point is still valid. 31 felonies under Meyer but minimal criticism for UF. One player takes impermissible benefits at USC and it's a shitstorm of negative press. It's unjust and damaging to the reputation of USC.
The written sanctions are not the big problem because those will go away. What will not go away is how USC has been branded by society as a dirty, cheating program.

Still not 31 felonies. It is 31 arrests and I don't think you have seen minimal criticism. I guess you missed the Yahoo, SI, Sporting News, and countless other articles about Urban Meyer when he got back into coaching.
I still don't think anyone showed that anyone of Urban's players had a free house on the beach that his family was living in though.
USC got branded because it did have a player receiving those benefits. It's not like they were made up. With the size of these compliance departments at Universities it is their job to know what house parents and players are living in and to look into other items that they may have acquired over time. Tressell lost his job over not forwarding an email about tatoos and tOSU is seen as a dirty program because of it as well, when over time, they had been as clean as anyone in major football.

Meyer received intense criticism for a few weeks and then it died down. USC received intense criticism for years. Why the disparity? Was Reggie's parents receiving benefits somehow worse?
It's clear that it's not made up. But do you sincerely believe that the penalties were justified AND do you believe that other programs are being punished with the same level of intensity?

I think you have the wrong perception if you think that USC is viewed as the dirtiest program in the nation.
You are also way off on the Urban Meyer issue. Not saying it in a good way, but he had 31 players arrested. That is very different than having 80 players convicted of a felony.
You are making an accusation about someone else's programs when it isn't true and complaining about accusations that others make of your program all at the same time.

I think the sanctions would have been appropriate if the "cheating" was at the same levels that Alabama got slammed for or the academic scandal that FSU was caught with. Both of those scandals actually involved school administrators and multiple student-athletes in the same sport.
Was that a false accusation too?
However, back to the OP...USC is #1.

In the scheme of fair play and following the NCAA rules? Yes.
Not everything that is against the law is an NCAA violation.
Personally, I don't have all the facts and really don't care that much to know every little thing. I think most programs have been punished fairly, but admit that I think that the NCAA also puts a lot of stock in how the violations were found. A program like Miami that self-reported the violations isn't going to be treated the same as a USC program that someone reported. That is just the way they are. I also think the way the AD and Carroll handled the matter after the fact did USC no favors.

To clarify I'm talking more specifically about negative press. Obviously you can't sanction a program for its players smoking pot. My biggest complaint is not the sanctions themselves but the damage to USC's reputation. In fact, that's what most USC fans probably truly care about it. USC has been scrutinized way more than it should have been.
The whole self-reporting thing is definitely big. The sad reality is that programs who self-report likely only do so as not to meet the same fate as USC. Too bad USC botched that part. All things considered, I still think the penalties USC met were too harsh.
I actually don't want other programs to be punished with the same magnitude because it's wrong. Reggie Bush doesn't give a rat's ass about the sanctions because he didn't suffer any consequences. The only people who were affected were fans and the 30 guys who may not even get a shot at a college education.

I am not involved enough to know any of that. I was upset and pissed, but I also was upset and pissed that things weren't being done properly at Alabama.
The textbook situation was students selling used textbooks instead of returning them to the University by the way. None of them got a free house on the beack in San Diego.
The issue USC ran into was that someone should have known....and possibly did and the reaction to the investigation was less than helpful. Also, a third party had to turn them in whereas Alabama and FSU both turned themselves in. Whether or not you agree, that matters in these issues.
In 2000 when Alabama got slammed, it wasn't even a graduate, student, or recruit that was said to receive a benefit. A booster, that was just a fan, and not a grad, was shown to have paid a coach at a school in Memphis to send a player to Alabama. That was turned in by Tennessee and we got slammed big time for not reporting that ourselves.
That's what happens.

Reggie may not care now, but one day he will wish he still had that trophy and he will wish that he could be a part of the USC family......all of which has been taken away. My dad is an SC alum and I am a fan of the school and football program, so it's not like my comments are coming from a hater, but perception is not reality and I don't think the perception is taking as bad of a hit as some think. USC is still seen as a great school and a great program. If you question that, just see all the haters. No one dislikes UCLA, Cal, or Arizona, because they don't matter to them the same way USC matters.
No one was hating Alabama 6 or 7 years ago, but enter Saban and 2 BCS titles, and we are the most hated program there is........right there where you guys were 5 years ago or so.
When they forget all about you it's time to worry, IMO.

Methinks you should study your map a little closer if you think East San Diego County is a beach house. Think Moreno Valley and that's pretty much where the Griffins were living rent free.
Should have known is a made up standard when things cannot be proven. One would think that largest compliance department in the country(OSU) should have known about all of the shenanigans that were taking place. So once again, just like in life...size does not matter.
Booster trying to convince Reggie to leave USC < Booster buying a player to COME TO Alabama. Nevermind the fact that your booster was affiliated with the school whereas, USC's "booster" was not.
Once again, back to the OP...USC is #1.

And you don't think that is the same way every SEC that does have a chance to win a BCSCG feels going into the game. The first time one loses to another team, that team won't here the end of it. It happens to everyone.
I still don't know why some care so much about what people on a message board think, feel, or say. None of us have votes in a poll.

One question for you... how it is truly "self reporting" when the allegations are leaked by someone other than the university?
The initial reporting is what should matter. Just like OSU... they did NOT self report. The report was already out there - they just regurgitated what was already said. The NCAA was likely working on the allegations at the same time.
Fight On!
