Twitter: Absolutely, Sure, No Thanks, or Never

  • A few mentioned no intent to ever use Twitter, not understanding the reasoning or simply having zero interest.

    I get that.

But I do think it's a great tool, personally. It can be a source of news, a stream of humor, a constant inspirational through words or pictures, or the pulse of your teams (or a rival's).

It's a matter of who you follow. I bet 90% or more, my wager being more, of the writers on this network have accounts. For us recruiting fans, following them -- and only them -- would be a steady flow of insight, commentary, and updates.

    It's up to you.

Don't know what a hashtag is? Think of it as a way to index thoughts or track a conversation. Monday night, you could've searched #MNF and see commentary from all users. Or just follow a few and leave it at that. Someone irritate you with their drivel? Unfollow and they're gone.

So of the board, where do you put yourself? Never gonna use it, or just haven't tried? As a guy fascinated by how small social media has made this world, I'd love to hear some thoughts.

  • Never going to use it. I think it's a good tool for news outlets to release quick, up-to-the-minute coverage, but I think the vast majority of Twitter users' tweets provide no discernable benefit to society. Nobody cares what little Johnny had for breakfast or where little Suzie happens to be this week. If Twitter was restricted to simply news-worthy items, I'd like (and use) it a lot more.

  • I use Twitter for tons of things, but mainly it is my source of news. I know everything almost as soon as it happens. Very useful.

I'm not trying to sway your opinion, but offer the counterpoint.

What you want? The beauty of Twitter. You choose which accounts to follow. Ya never have to see that worthless stuff.

Your point is the largest reason a Marketing professor of mine wouldn't join. So I created one for him, spent a couple days selecting accounts to follow, and he checks it regularly. Never tweeted. But likes the stream of links and commentary.

    I totally understand that

I just don't need up to the second news, what is going on in this world from a news standpoint doesn't interest me much cause most of it is depressing, violent or just flat out stupid info that I would rather not know anything about

I don't care if Tom Brady had a baby girl, or if some loser decided to murder a bunch of children cause his life sucked

I can appreciate that. As I mentioned, just a matter of how you use it.

Personally? I use it to network with those in sports marketing. I'm of the belief that a person my age (and still in college) can't afford to not have an online presence. Twitter is one way I've established mine.

The news-worthiness is far from my only issue with Twitter, it just happens to be one of the more easily-articulated points. I don't want to have to wade through endless amounts of bullshit to get to the few potentially relevant pieces of news. Also, in many instances, the reputable news accounts I might follow won't necessarily have the up-to-date, on-the-ground type of news I'd want, that'd come from the twitter accounts of normal people. What I want is a pipe-dream, since there's no way to filter out the non-newsworthy tweets while still allowing newsworthy tweets from normal people.

Among other things, I also despise the self-centered, "Look At Me," narcissistic culture that Twitter breeds. I think one of the major problems in American (and world) culture nowadays is the belief that everyone's opinion is somehow important or valid. By giving everyone on earth a forum in which to express their every thought, and then granting those thoughts validation through retweets, followers, etc., Twitter is reinforcing a cultural tendency to strongly believe in the validity of one's own opinion with a minimum of critical thought.

  • Twitter is great if you take it at face value. One thing I do like about it is that you can get great information faster than any other outlet. A lot of breaking sports news hits twitter before another form of media.

Regarding your second paragraph, I think that's one of the largest shifts social media has caused. Thoughts are unfiltered, unchecked and mostly unnecessary on Twitter. With over 100M accounts, there's a lot of people just using the outlet because they can. It's amazing that an individual who tweets 140 characters can become so noted so quickly. At the same time, it's terrifying.

On my personal one, I "favorite" tweets with article links to view em later. It's my bookmarking. Read it, unfavorite.

I'm still learning the ins and outs. What does favoriting do?

Essentially adds it to a list. Favorite a tweet, go to your profile and click favorites. Every tweet you favorite will list there.

A lot of my friends use it to hold on to funny tweets, etc. Kind of a display of what they like.

As I mentioned, I use it in a different way.

Just look at it. It's nothing but pictures of kids passed out across Columbia. From awkwardly on the stairs to in bars.

One of those "Thank God I'm not on there" accounts. Plenty of schools with the same account type.
