If you don't think the B1G is more attractive from a research standpoint, I don't know what to tell you. shrug

North Carolina does not need the big tens research money. Understand this.

The SEC isn't THE power baseball conference, it is ONE of THE power baseball conferences along with the Pac 12, Big XII and ACC.

The point is North Carolina a power baseball program and their baseball people will not be happy about joining a conference that is consistently worse than the Sun Belt and Conference USA. North Carolina has been the CWS multiple times the last 10 years and was in the CWS Final a few years ago. Regardless of what you think, Carolina and UVA care about baseball, and leaving a baseball league for a league in which 75% of the programs don't even try to compete and would rather leave the NCAA and form their own club sport league is a big deal to them.

Virginia baseball's success has been relatively recent and the school won't make the decision based on one sport alone. The Big Ten's CIC and tv deal fits the mold for these well respected state schools. As flagship universities of their respective states, they just lost one of their long time peers (Maryland) to greener pastures. Both have much more in common with the B1G schools rather than the ACC's private institutions or less than stellar Louisville/NC State.

I think you're really downplaying academia in this discussion.

Totally agree, been saying from the start baseball won't even be a blip on the radar of this move.

Just think it will be an interesting sidebar.

Fans will get over it. The president and the board need to do what's best for the school, both academically and athletically. I think that's the B1G for UNC.

It's not like going to the B1G is bad from a basketball standpoint, which I bet drives a lot of their fandom. shrug

  • A&M wanting to get out was public knowledge for months but almost every other conference move was done in a more secret manner until a deal was reached. A&M is also a very large school with a serious alumni base, and while UNC has great supporters, the school is much smaller. The people who attend the university are much different than the tee shirt contingent, as we all like to say.

I understand the fans worries about this as they want to see regional matchups. However, just look at the research money the B1G schools bring in. PSU for example just signed an $850 million contract with the Navy last year. That is what will impress the school officials.

  • UNC is one of the most established brands in college athletics and the SEC or Big Ten would welcome them with open arms.

You guys are correct. Decisions like this are made by academics. Athletics departments are consulted but the final decision lies with the presidents and BOTs.

If UNC, UVA and GT leave the ACC, I think the league is in trouble. Clemson and Florida State most assuredly would seek membership in the Big 12 and the SEC would target Virginia Tech and NC State.

The SEC isn't going to compare to the Big Ten because of the BTN. The SEC screwed up when they agreed to have ESPN take care of what an SEC network would cover. Now they got to find a way out of it.

Besides, the SEC has no interest in UNC. They are targeting VT and NC St to get to 16.

OU/OkState make 16. Get your shit strait.

The administration doesn't have a lot of say in it either. This is basic math. If the ACC can generate enough money per school to remain competitive, schools like UNC can afford to stay. If the ACC can't, schools like UNC will leave and the ACC will go the way of the Big East. Money matters. Most athletic departments are operating in the red and the cost of coache/facilities/recruiting is accelerating. UNC is not immune to the basic laws of economics.

After. The Navy said that only PSU could handle such a contract.

We will see. Personally, I think they will go for television dollars over the football product from this point moving forward.
