USA Today - Study: Atheists distrusted as much as rapists

  • Rivver said...

Maybe you can show me where exactly in the article it said "most non religious people chose the atheist teacher" because I clearly missed that part.

The participants, who were from religious and nonreligious backgrounds, most often chose the atheist teacher.

Maybe you could show me where the religious people chose the atheist teacher the majority of the time?

It's sad that people don't trust other people who don't share their belief in some invisible space deity.

Way to interject an ignorant comment.

"The participants, who were from religious and nonreligious backgrounds, most often chose the atheist teacher."

A quote located in the middle of the article. I would have expected the non-religious types to balance it out more.

I'm operating under the assumption that the percentages of religious/non-religious participants in the study was remotely similar to that of the overall population in both countries, where non-religious people are a very small minority.

That still would not mean they would choose the atheist teacher the majority of the time. It is likely but unless we had actual figures it can't be proven.

It's hard to trust someone that doesn't know what to believe in themselves, is that what you're saying?

Not really... I just don't trust them. I don't consider myself very religious at all - I don't go to church, I rarely (if ever) pray, etc.

But I know there's a higher power and it blows my mind that some people deny that. I don't want to list all the reasons, but there are plenty of reasons to believe in at least some presence.

The assumption that atheist dont believe in anything is rather fecetious. I think most deists and agnostics get grouped in with atheists unfairly as well.

Condescending and disparaging attitudes like that towards religion are exactly why. Apparently for some atheists being insulting is a job requirement.

While his diction may be arguable, I'm confused by what's wrong with it? Is god not invisible? Is god not possibly out in space? Is god not a deity? Should he only address god as the omnipotent and always present Jesus/Allah/Jehovah/Krishna etc. ?

I'm not religious but I agree with this. There's unnecessary hostility that both sides of the debate are guilty of.

  • I just gotta ask, wtf was up with that question and answer scenario. Would the first thing that pops into your head if you see a damaged parked car be to ask whether or not it was a teacher, an atheist teacher, or a rapist teacher?

"The study, conducted among 350 Americans adults and 420 Canadian college students, asked participants to decide if a fictional driver damaged a parked car and left the scene, then found a wallet and took the money, was the driver more likely to be a teacher, an atheist teacher, or a rapist teacher?"

IMO the people that participated in the study are stupid. The right answer is obviously the first option (The teacher took the money). That is the "most likely" since option B and C both fall under the umbrella of option A.

Oh, come on. If the way he worded it wasn't disparaging then I don't know what is.

I honestly don't care if you're atheist, pagan, muslim, etc. I'm Catholic myself. I disagree with atheism from a religious standpoint. Does that give me the right to trash anyone and anything related to atheism in my sight? No. And the same goes for atheists. But there are those on both sides who see it as their (non)god-given right to tear down the other side. Frankly, there are hard-core so-called "Christians" whom I find just as amusing(and simultaneously annoying) as militant atheists (coughcoughrickperrycoughcough).
