The thing isn't the reductions anymore since Lane front-loaded by signing a huge 2011 class, and redshirted a million guys. The only issue is staying at the 75 scholarship cap we have. In 2010 and 2011 Lane basically played with a NFL sized roster because every young kid was redshirting, and he hardly rotated at all. I think he played 43 scholarship guys at Oregon last year, and plans on rotating and playing a lot more guys this year.
Many people think that the scholarship reductions haven't been felt yet, but Lane took them head on the first two seasons by redshirting almost all of his recruits. Does 75 guys create depth problems? Yes and no, depending on in-season attrition and avoiding a plague of injuries. I think he recruited well enough and planned well enough to get out of it unscathed. During the Carroll era USC rarely played with a full 85, and Pete's classes averaged around 19 IIRC.
