USC will have only 26 juniors and seniors on this 2012' team.

  • So if they sign 30 players the next 2 years (15 per year) then they can maintain around 75 on scholarship. Lose 26 players the next 2 years, but replace it with 30. Kiffin has done an excellent job in this area. Situations like this always look better on paper, but this is in the ballpark. The last year of the schollie reductions I think USC will dip to 70 schollie players. USC won't even be able to sign 25 players in 2014' when they are allowed to because they would be over the 85 alloted. I love how people automatically assume that USC will be down to 55 scholarship players in 3 years. No chance in hell.

  • Kiffin and Orgeron are recruiting masterminds. USC was always going to do well through this.

If your school wasn't so damned expensive the walk on program would be booming too.

  • Speaking of Walkons.......I wish another Clay Matthews would walk on.

  • USC being good is good for CFB. Games between them and Oregon are going to great games in the years to come

I think Kiffen has done a great job in managing the numbers. The last year of probation and the first year off of it will be the low points (numbers wise), as you mentioned.

USC has a lot of talent coming back and should be solid next year. However, only having 26 juniors and seniors is a challenge in itself from a leadership/experience point of view. It will be interesting to watch those dynamics play out next year in big/close games and in the locker room.

  • Just wait until Barkley goes down with injury and a couple starters go down with injury. Soon you will be witnessing your 3rd string QB and RB lead your team into the game against your biggest rival.

Oh wait, that was our probation experience.

Seriously though, you'll see the effects once the games start. Your team will play hard, but lose close games. Then after a couple of seasons like this you will understand that the reason you are losing those close games is because you don't have the depth the other upper echelon teams have. I know it looks good now, and hopefully for your sake it works out, but I haven't seen a team take that big of a hit and not miss a beat so I don't expect USC to be any different.

Of course SC will lose some games over the next few seasons due to a lack of depth, but you better believe we won't be taking any Ls to the Louisiana Monroes of the world like Bama did in 2007.

  • USC's depth won't be an issue for the next 2 years, this I know. The 2 deep is loaded and that's what wins football games. Sine when does the 70th best player on a college team matter anyway. USC won the 04' title with 76 on schollie, so that theory has no merit. USC went to Autzen stadium last year and won with 43 schollie players. It's overrated!

you realize you went 8-5 with those 43 players last year, right?

but i like usc and hope they do well. cfb is better when usc is good, imo. goes for all the all time good teams.

also, i thought usc could only sign 10 the next 2 years cause kiffin used up so many in the appeal year but it wasn't repealed. maybe i'm mistaken.

Maybe you will, maybe you won't. Hard for me to get upset about a loss that was the turning point in our program and ultimately led to 2 BCS titles the last 3 years and more likely to come.

    True.

But probation and depth were not the root of the issue in 2007 for Saban. Shula was fired because A. he couldn't beat Auburn and B. he had NO control of the team. The latter is how you lose to the LA-Monroes of the world.

The program was on the verge of tearing itself apart from within in 2007, as Saban began cleaning house. Saban lost to LA-Monroe but used it to show that the program was at rock bottom for a multitude of reasons and it would be his way or the highway from there on.

Also, that is why strong upperclassman leadership and quality attitudes are needed. USC will not be back to its glory days for a few years. They'll need strong team leaders and involved coaching to hold the team together. If not, they will lose the LA-Monroes.

That game had nothing to do with probation.

SC went 10-2. We can sign 15 per year for a max of 75 scholarships per year for the next 3 years.

  • USC went 10-2 last year and finished 6th in the AP poll. Started 10 fresh and sophs, which means big things in 2013 too.

    Trojan1987

  • thought you were talking about 2010.

and i also thought that the ncaa let you guys sign more in first year during the appeal, but said they count against the next 2 years.

apparently i'm mistaken on that as well. apologies.

No sense in arguing. Look at our seasons on probation, there is a 10 win season on there as well. You'll be educated in a few years. Just like you were during the whole investigation when nobody thought major sanctions would come. But hey, maybe yall are the one team who can withstand major NCAA penalties. Oklahoma, Alabama, and other prominent tradition rich programs weren't able to breeze through that period.

No we went 8-5 with a bunch of players that moved on. This year's team only had a few seniors starters.

The right players make the difference. There will be a little housecleaning going on with some malcontents checking out. It's already starting.

And you shouldn't be upset. Saban is as solid as they come. Hopefully LFK can get SC there next season.

  • Pretty sure the sanctions won't affect USC in 2012. It actually helped Matt Barkley return next year, so thanks NCAA.

How many more kids will be leaving the team? How many have transferred since your last game?

Three have transferred and two more probably will follow.

These are basically roster moves forced by the 75 rule. The coaches have made it clear that if you aren't happy with playing time you are welcome to leave. The Amir Carlisle transfer was more about DJ Foster than anything else. It helped out Amir and cleared instant playing time for Foster to consider.

Josh Shaw a highly recruited D-back that went to Florida from California has transferred to USC and is petitioning for a hardship to play in 2012.
