I take it you meant Jake Ryan, but if you were talking about Jake Long he was a 4*.

  • Xavier Rhodes was a 3* Wideout and is a pretty good corner for FSU.

Also Rodney Hudson was a 3* who turned into a 4 year starter on the O-Line and FSU's best O-linemen to come out in quite a few years.

  • The definition of underrated recruit is a no-stars RB that Iowa recruited out of Eerie, PA in 2000. Iowa was his only Division 1 offer and was coming off a 1-10 season in 1999. He came to Iowa and started from day 1 as a strong safety. He quickly became the heart and soul of Iowa's football resurrection. He went on to be an All-American safety despite his diminutive size (5'8" in football cleats), and he helped lead Iowa to 21 wins in his junior and senior years and a berth in the 2003 Orange Bowl. In the NFL, he was a Super Bowl champion and NFL Defensive POY.

His given name is Demond, but you probably know him as Bob Sanders.

  • There are too many Hawkeyes to list in this tread; Iowa's program is built on developing recruits that the other schools overlook, so there are a lot of "diamond in the rough" types in the past ten years. Here are a few that jump to mind:
    Bob Sanders (see above)
Dallas Clark (walk-on LB, became the Mackey winner and a 1st round pick as TE)
Robert Gallery (walk-on TE, became the Outland winner and a #2 overall pick as a OT)
Chad Greenway (8-man QB in high school, became a 1st round pick as OLB)
Marvin McNutt (3-star QB out of St. Louis, became the leading receiver in Iowa history in almost every category)

    Current players:
Tanner Miller (no offers besides Iowa, who offered the week of signing day, played as a TrFr, started as a So last year)
Kevonte Martin-Manley (Iowa stole him from the MAC the week before signing day in '10, became #3 receiver as RsFr, now set to be a starter as a So)

Watch for Travis Perry in the next few years. He was a walk-on safety out of high school who has put on 30 pounds and made the 2-deep as an OLB to start his RsFr season.

Every team can go through the past to point out players, the OP asked for current players like you last paragraph.

  • I lived in Louisiana for several years and a kid out of Evangel HS in 2004 named Jacob Hester was 3 star recruit. He was in a five man rotation in the national championship game against Ohio State and averaged over 4 yards a carry. What I remember most about that game is that if LSU needed 3 yards for a 1st down JH got 4, if they needed 5 he got 6. Now he plays in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers. I got to watch him play in several HS games and he just seems to rise to the occasion whenever he was called upon.

I think we all can take it either way...

He used the word, "Became," which is the past tense if you were conjugating the word, become.

So, this player could have become a star 10 years ago, or last year.

Not meaning to be the grammar police....but it wasn't specific as to how long ago.
