Updates on Debate?

  • That's always been a question of mine: Why is it so hard to find a candidate that is both "GTFO government!" when it comes to economic AND social issues? I've seen a lot of candidates from the Republican side ('cause obviously most Democrats favor a more involved government) talk about how they want the feds out of as much of their businesses as possible (taxes, regulations, etc.) and then turn around and want things like making gay marriage illegal, outlawing Sunday alcohol sales (at the local level), etc. Is there not a small government party anymore?

Don't under-estimate the power of momentum. You literally have 48-47% voting differential out there with 5% independent.

The reality is you have to energize your 48 or 47 percent to show up. If you can win a percent from the independents or pull a percent away ...

Being a conservative fiscal , liberal socially aka a true tea party guy, YeH gtfo of my shit government, romney went from blah to as excited I was since the great RE

You could be right, I'm certainly not an expert on elections. However, I still feel that Romney needs to step up his game outside of debates in order to win the election. But that's just my opinion.

Religion has a strong impact, it's tough to tell people that their God doesn't have the right to control other people (as opposed to saying that you shouldn't tax someone else, etc). That's just my opinion though.

It's worthwhile to note that Romney has yet to be held accountable for anything yet. He can promise anything he wants without real specifics since he hasn't done anything yet.

    (Also, vote Johnson!)

True. But Obama has had four years to do things. He made specific promises. He controlled both houses of congress for the first half of his term. If he just gets a pass on whatever he said last time he was running for election and how he has failed to even try to accomplish most of his original promises his first term, then just turn off the TV because it's irrelevant what either of them say. Either what they say (and promise) matters or it doesn't.

  • Oh, dear god I feel bad for Biden on 10/11 I've only really paid attention to Paul Ryan in committee meetings and on Meet the Press. If it's anything like that mixed with tonight it's gonna be a blood bath.

My more left leaning friends on FB are complaining about Romney being mean and smirking too much.

I'm voting for neither (vote Johnson!).

But to me, I summed this up as such. Romney wants to:

Not raise tax rates on anyone
    Not cut from education significantly
Not cut from military spending at all
Not cut from health care spending
Not cut from medicare (and add 716 billion)
    Balance the budget

That seems like horsecrap to me. If you want to balance the budget, you have to cut SOMETHING.

EDIT: Obama's plan is no better. So I'm not taking sides. I just wish someone would actually propose something instead of saying why the other 'solution' won't work.

Sadly, knowing this country, it will be from education. I don't feel like Americans as a whole really value a good education.

The thing is, you can't balance a trillion dollar a year deficit by cutting education alone. You have to cut everywhere, but no candidate is going to say that.

It's become a wish list and no one is checking the math.

EDIT: Upvote for you for appreciating education. Creating careers is the next venture. Science and math ftw.

That's fine. But Obama, as President, has submitted a budget each year he has been in office that generated more than a $1 trillion deficit each year. And the budget he submitted this year was voted down in the Senate 96-0. It didn't even get a single Democrat vote. So if the question is which candidate is more likely to balance the budget, the answer absolutely can't be Obama. He has no interest in balancing the budget. He does not even believe it's an issue.

Go look up tax revenues by year. Clinton and Bush had the two biggest tax revenue increases in US History after both signed Huge Tax cuts. It's possible.

Like I said, I'm not supporting Obama. I'm voting for Gary Johnson, a libertarian candidate who says he will cut spending by 43% to balance the budget.

Anywho, I agree to some extent. I don't think either candidate has any interest in balancing the budget. No one seriously discussed the issue, and no one provided an appreciable cuts. Each mentioned vague generalities, like "loopholes" and "fortunate people who benefited from Amernca" and other stupid crap.

    That means nothing, unfortunately.

Each also had the boom of the biggest industry since the early 1900s in the internet industry. So keep that in mind.

He won't pull ahead, but the gap will definitely lessen. The key will be continuing this in the next two debates.

Alot of the republican plan revolves around getting.the economy/jobs going which will increase revenue and therefore reduce.deficit . Romney has already talked about cchanges to Medicaid to reduce costs and.he is.careful.not to say cuts.

That's my beef. Who wouldn't vote for a candidate who promises everything? Well, I won't because I want to work the math out before I submit my support.

I may not have a career in a field related to math and science, but I love and value all that I've learned in those disciplines. I want to shoot myself every time I hear people stumped at how much to pay at a restaurant for the tip because they can't do basic percentages... I don't even consider that math anymore, that's just common sense in my book.
