I'm not 100% sure, but I think the pay as you go plans on most major companies only have a select few phones that you can purchase. I also dont think smartphones are an option. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not liking this tier system.. although a buddy of mine that works at a Verizon store told me it will lower my monthly bill since I only use about 2-3 gigs of Data per month.

You can get smartphones with pre-paid companies.

The iPhone 4s is coming Virgin Mobile soon, and they have a decent array of different Android phones like the Optimus V or Elite or they just got the EVO 4g (was the EVO 3D on Sprint).

Yep, I have had the Optimus V for only a year now and it is pretty decent for being a pre-paid phone.

I only pay $25 a month for 300 anytime minutes, unlimited texting, and unlimited data.

is it painfully slow to surf and app?

It has it moments when the network gets heavy, but it's decent I would say.

They are getting the old Sprint 4G network soon as well, so that should make everything a lot faster if you get one of their 4G phones.

I was in a Verizon store this weekend and asked about their new plans coming up. The rep was not happy and said he was not looking forward to the new plans. The plans will be data centric, with all phones and devices on your account working off a pool of data. You buy the amount of data you use and it is tiered by price. A good thing is your phone can now function as a data hotspot for no charge. Upgrade by the 28th to lock into your current plan for two years or you will be forced to update your plan when you do. See your Verizon store for details. Don't want everyone to be surprised.

ahhh c-spire is awesome. i got unlimited data calls messages picture text email . the whole package for 130 a month for 2 phones. cant beat that at all. and my phone picks up everywherre

  • Just left verizon an spoke with a couple of associates...

Basically if you upgrade (and sign a contract) before the 28th you can get the current plans that are offered. After the 28th you will be forced to get a teired (family) plan that shares data. The only way to keep what you currently have is to not upgrade or sign a new contract. So for example, if you want the iPhone5 when it arrives and you currently have unlimited data, you can get the iPhone5, but you will have to pay full price ($650 - $850 + tax) to avoid signing a new contract.

  • I have Sprint for my daughters and they both have Blackberry Curves. I just checke their current data usage and one used 1G of data, the other over 6. She uses the data for e-mail and web. The Blackberry doesnt have wifi so that would cut down on a lot of data when she is home.

The service is better than it used to be (coverage) and I like the plans.

    Definitely thinking about switching.

This is a great example of how Verizon is going to eff over quite a few families. You at least are tech savvy enough to check the usage of your daughters, but there are going to be quite a few out there who only know how to check facebook and emails on their iPhones and are going to be convinced somehow or another that 1 gb is going to be enough data for a family of 4 to share per month.

This whole thing seems like a bait and switch to me, I'm not even sure Verizon is being ethical, because the sales people are just going to be looking for sales, and they will convince everyone to give the 1gb a chance and if you go over that you can always buy more data as you go along. They are charging more for data while making it easier to use.

Does anyone know what they pay for data over in S. Korea or Japan? I swear I read a few years ago that it was much cheaper than in the US.

I also checked my usage on the verizon site and for the last 6 months I avg 3gb/month. That is without using youtube or Pandora, just surfing and playing a few games.

  • I would like to see a comparison of data usage for various phones. IPhone, several top Androids, Blackberry etc. it should break down tasks performed on each. Do some phones uses more data for the same tasks? I heard 4g uses more than 3G. Is e-mail on a Blackberry more data intensive?

Bama Tusks... I meant to thank you for this info... My local Verizon employees would like to thank you as well, because I would have went straight postal in that b*tch if I went to upgrade and had to pay 1K for a couple smart phones.

  • Well this sucks! I was thinking of switching to Verizon. I've been with AT&T(suncom/bell south/AT&T) since 1998.

I have an iPhone and use 3-4g every month. It's an "unlimited" plan but when I hit 3G they cut the speed in half for the remainder of the month... $100/ month to get my speed reduced sucks.

I've heard of people buying a pay as you go phone and taking the sim card and putting in the iPhone before activating it. Anyone know anything about that?

    Maybe I'll look at sprint.

  • I have an upgrade availalbe on Verizon, going to use it before the 28th for sure. Both myself and my wife have 4g phones and these things eat up data. Mainly because it is so easy to stream netflix, youtube, etc.

we have a pretty good set up right now, basically paying $72 per phone for unlimited everything. tried telling my mother in law about this but I'm pretty sure it went over her head

72 per phone with Verizon? I would hold onto that plan to...I am ditching Verizon as soon as my contract is up with them, had them for about 12 years , seems they are more interested in getting new customers than giving the ones they have a break.
