Argentina's Bergoglio becomes Pope Francis

New pope is Argentinas Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires, who takes the name Pope Francis. Francis, 76, is the first non-European pope in the modern era, the first South American pope and the first Pope Francis.

Honestly I was hoping for the New Yorker to become Pope. It would just be very entertaining. They made a big change though making a non European the Pope. We'll see how it works out.

As an Italian, I was hoping we could get back one of us in there, but from all accounts, Pope Francis was a solid pick.

Don't know a whole lot about him right now. Will have to do some research to figure out if I like the pick or not. South America has some of the most Catholics though. Not shocking to see a Pope from that area.

Both his parents were italian immigrants, he's still italian just grew up in South America. I'm not buying the whole South American thing the church is trying to sell, in my books he's italian

First Jesuit Pope as well. From all accounts, he is a great pick. I believe he was the one who got the second most votes during the last conclave that elected Pope Benedict. Only concern would be age, but the OP is right. Great day to be a Catholic.
NBC news put it right talking about how in this day of twitter, Facebook, etc. there are no surprises anymore. NOBODY except those in conclave knew who was picked until he was announced. I love Catholic traditions and how they have been kept up.

agreed. as should the high schools of america, the aau coaches, the girl scouts, the boy scouts, the rabbi's of temple, the muslims, the little league coaches, the pop warner coaches, etc etc etc....

Argentina is 60% Italian. Only reason they speak spanish, is because of the many different Italian dialects. Spanish was more universal.

Almost all Argentinians are Italian immigrants. I've been there and they all have Italian culture and heritage. They speak spanish in an italian accent! It's hilarious!
