Vols/Arky Jobs

  • Visiting Volquest/Volnation & other outlets,,, some fans brought up Charlie Strong as a canidate. Others quickly shot that down, saying the higher ups/boosters would not allow them to hire a BLACK head coach wtf??What is up with that, any truth to that or BS? Would Arky do something similar?? In the SEC you hear rumors like Bama Black.QB, AUburn not hiring Turner Gil, Ole Miss white students pissed off after Obama re-elected. From an outsider looking in, seems like there seems to still be a little problem with race issues in the south, or am i tripping???

  • Charlie Strong is from Arkansas. I seriously doubt Arkansas would have a problem with a black coach. Our basketball coach is black. Hog fans wanted him for a while.

  • I'm sure Tennessee has a black basketball coach. Franklin is doing just fine in Nashville.

I think they'll hire the best they can hire (in their opinion). The Turner Gil thing doesn't look so hot now. There are plenty of people who would still have a problem with it (meaning probably 10%) at some schools, but the other 90% would drown them out if they felt it was the best hire. Put it this way: Do you think any of those programs would hesitate to take Mike Tomlin? Obviously he wouldn't be interested, but you get my drift. There is nothing to the black QB thing at Bama. Philip Sims came it with a lot of hype and many Bama fans were hoping he'd beat McCarron for the job. Then we got to see them both play. I didn't even read up on the Ole Miss thing, but heard on Finebaum that there were a handful doing that stuff and a crowd just standing around watching them.

Again, I think that 10% is way too many, but it's not a widespread cultural thing.

  • Race is a big issue in the south and it probably always will be. But the racism goes both ways.
