WWYD - Paterno

  • When news about Penn St and Sandusky first broke, I was as mad as anyone but I have began rethinking things now. What would you do if a "kid" came up to you and told you that one of your closest friends was a pedo? A friend that you have known and worked with for years and years. Would you take this person at his word and immediatly turn on your friend and neighor without any proof? If you had taken the info to the police but nothing happened, would you still believe the young man that told you this or would you begin to think it was a false accusation?

If I told you that I saw Saban banging a horse yesterday would you believe me or want proof before spreading the word that Saban bangs horses? Most would tell me "pics or gtfo"

  • Suspend him immediately and go to the police. There were also indicators that it was happening well before the McQueary incident. He's not allowed anywhere close to campus until a full police investigation takes place. Also, why would a graduate assistant football coach, who is also close family friends with Paterno, lie about something like that.

  • If someone I trusted and had no reason to lie came uo to me and said he saw my friend have anal sex with a young boy in the shower then yes, yes I would say something to the authorities. If you wouldn't you are a coward. I don't know how else to say it. You are a huge POS.

But before I did I would call him in and ask him to explain himself first. I'm sure he would deny it, but he would have to have a very good excuse to keep me from bringing it up to authorities. Why would someone make something like that up out of the blue? It was going to ruin the guys career probably if he said anything.

That whole paragraph about JoePa was so that AUgolf could ask this one question.

Should have saved time and just asked it right away.

I said that after going to the police (which Paterno did) and after the investigation nothing is done, wouldnt you assume that maybe it was a false accusation?

And wouldnt you want some kind of proof before ruining your friends life? Is an accusation all it takes or do you need proof? Our entire judicial system is based on proof, not just accusations.

  • I have worked in high school athletics and I can tell you if this rumor came across my desk I would have called Chief of Police or a Sheriff in so it's not just anyone, I would have called in the coach, the kid and the kids parents.

And NO ONE would have been allowed to leave until there were written statements everyone signed as them being ok with it.

I would have had a few private conversations with the policeman present and the individuals and then pieced it together and made a decision as a group.

90% because the rumor would freak me the hell out and I'd want it addressed and 10% because I would want every ounce of liability off of me. I don't want to lose my career because of it.

Either the kid and the coach agree that it was a big misunderstanding in which case I'd tell the coach that if he ever put himself in a compromising position with a kid again it'd be the dumbes thing he's ever done.

Or the kid would reveal through word or extreme nervousness that something happened in which case I'd suggest the parents file charges and the coach gets cuffed and led out, placed on administrative leave.

Paterno did go to the police! The police would never let you run their interigation. When was the last time you heard of the police asking a criminal's boss to take over their investigation?

Well, the question you asked was this: "What would you do if a "kid" came up to you and told you that one of your closest friends was a pedo? A friend that you have known and worked with for years and years. Would you take this person at his word and immediately turn on your friend and neighor without any proof?"....and I answered your question. I'm not sure what you are asking me because you are being vague and going in circles. If you are referring tot he Penn State case then yes, that is my answer. If it is a random hypothetical and the person who tell me the "news" about my friend is a stranger, then it would be different. I still would not let it go though and confront everyone involved. But back to the PS case, either Peterno did go to the police or he didn't. If he did and is not lying, then he didn't ruin his friends life. In fact, nothing was ever said again about it. So then your question is void.

If you are asking me if I would press the situation, then yes, I would. Either a coach on my staff is lying about what he saw (and it would be something so big lie that I couldn't just let it go) or your friend is lying. Either way, we would have to get to the bottom of it. He's not going to just say, well, maybe he was not having anal sex with the kid and I was mistaken. That wpuld be a prtty damn big mistake and it's not like there is any room between the two. I would find the kid who was in the shower with Sandusky that night, sit him down, make sure he knew he was not in trouble, and ask him what happened. I like to think I'm a pretty good judge of character and could see through a young kid lying about being sodomized in the shower by a man he trusts. That's what I would do. One would have to go. I would not just sit around and act like it did not happen. But then again, I am an adult and not a senile, old, corrupt coach.

  • Paterno and Sandusky were not friends. They didn't even speak to each other once Sandusky retired in 1999. People who want to go with the "Paterno was covering up for Sandusky" theory just assumed that they were friends. They weren't. In fact, there was a genuine dislike between the two.

    getmyjive11

  • Just an FYI Weedline, Paterno never heard there was a rape in the shower, as much as you want it to be true. McQueary said he never saw rape, he just saw Sandusky in the shower and saw a boy in there in front of him. He then told Paterno he saw a boy in the shower with Sandusky. Did you bother to read the McQueary testimony?

I think Joe messed up and deserved to be fired, but you can't just make up parts of the story to fit your opinion.

First off, Saban isn't big enough to bang a horse so I know that's not true, you should have gone with a cow. You could have even played it like he went to Lee County to do it. Secondly, where are you getting that JoePa went to police, because be his own admission he only told his superior and thought he should have done more. You can't just make up information and act like it's factual without some form of evidence. There are a lot of things I would overlook about Paterno turning his head, but not molesting little boys. If Sandusky was an alcoholic, or had a gambling problem then JoePa handled the situation correctly. Considering the actual circumstances, he failed miserably, along with everyone else in State College, PA who had knowledge of Sandusky's actions. It's pathetic when we don't go above and beyond to protect children from predators and nobody at PSU did enough. I will say that it isn't fair Paterno is getting so much blame for the inept actions of so many others who didn't do any more than he did.

Not true, they were great friends up until 1999 when Paterno supposedly told Jerry he wouldn't succeed him at PSU. He also continued to allow Sandusky to run football camps at PSU facilities after that fact. I believe you are accurate about him not necessarily trying to cover up for JS, but I believe that is only because he was looking the other way in hopes the program he built at PSU wouldn't come crashing down after the news broke. Joe was a smart man, he knew the public backlash if his former DC was known to be a child molester.

    Oh really.....

"I described it was extremely sexual and that some kind of intercourse was going on,” the assistant coach, Mike McQueary, testified of the suspected assault by Sandusky, a longtime top assistant to Paterno. “There’s no question in my mind that I conveyed to them that I saw Jerry in the showers, and that it was severe sexual acts, and that it was wrong and over the line.”

    Apology?

"Under cross examination by an attorney for Curley, McQueary reiterated that he had not seen Sandusky penetrating or fondling the boy but was nearly certain he knew an assault happened in part because the two were standing so close and Sandusky's arms were wrapped around the youth."

"He said he did not give Paterno explicit details of what he believed he'd seen, saying he wouldn't have used terms like sodomy or anal intercourse out of respect for the longtime coach."

I believe your information is correct, however, I also believe this last quote is what went wrong in State College, PA. If McQueary didn't want to use those terms to Paterno, then he should have reported the incident elsewhere. Like I said previously, Paterno is getting too much of the blame here, but others like McQueary aren't getting enough.

    wut?

So he did not actually see Sanduskys penis entering the boy but saw him humping him naked from behind? Yeah, that could have happened to anyone. Who doesn't pretend to have anal sex with a minor naked in the shower. LMAO. You are as bad as Joe Paterno with your denial and that is saying a lot.

Your ex coach is a POS and will always be remembered as such.

I think Joe should have been fired and messed up. I just was refuting your story that Paterno was told about anal rape. He was not. He was told Sandusky was possibly doing something inappropriate. But continue to misconstrue what I'm saying, it says more about you than about me.

Come on man, as a fellow Bama fan I am embarrassed by this statement. Paterno had a terrible error in judgement that has no doubt tarnished his legacy forever, but to call him a POS is negligent. He has still never been accused of any crime, and did what he was required by law. While I agree he didn't do enough, you're going too far.

Much different circumstances dude. The guy retired to run a kids program. An assistant coach, not some kid, tells you that he witnessed him raping a young boy in the shower. I don't give a fuck if he's my friend, I take it to the police immediately.

A more mature example (Saban banging a horse, really?) would be if some kid told you he saw your friend murder someone else. You don't go to your friend and ask him about it, you go to the police. If you don't, you could get into major trouble.
