Was what Alabama did to Darius Philon right?

yes you go to college on a full scholarship but a greyshirt is not paid for by the school, while under greyshirt you pay.... so again not a full ride.... you eventually are awarded the full scholarship that pays for your schooling.... making a greyshirt not a full ride....

you can always wait to go to college 1 semester late and not pay anything.

What Saban did, and does, is bull crap. You SEC folk need to stop trying to convince yourself that this shit is okay. You can't (or you shouldn't) string a guy along to the near end of the process and then pull his scholly because there is someone else you would rather have; leaving that kid in many cases SOL when all his other school options have rull classes. Heck, why not get every single top kid to commit and pull their offers on the last day just to fuck with them and prevent them from going to rivals. Old Saint Nick at his best.

dude it is recruiting, it isn't limited to Saban and nor the SEC...... that is the ugly side of it... it happens..... hell it is the same as a kid flipping on NSD.....

I have a question. Who are the guys that have been greyshirted by Saban?

The only one I know personally was Preyear, and he never played a snap at Bama for a variety of reasons.

John Parker Wilson greyshirted and went on to start at QB for 3 years.

  • It is unethical. Look, if you promise a kid a spot, you should guarantee him one, or tell him he doesn't have a guarantee. That is just being honest.

If you tell the kid upfront that he is a greyshirt possibility, that is fair. If he had no clue this was possible, it is not right.

Anything less that that is just spin.

Petey smith and Woodson was suppose to but he got Grants spot when he left I believe.

I don't know without looking it up. Shula did it as well with success. Of course no 1 gave a crap about it then.

Who else is/was there? I was talking with my boss about the Taylor kid the other day and said that if he grey shirts, he'd never see the field. Who all has taken grey shirts and what's the track record been. It obviously worked out for JPW.

Don't you guys have a poster (like JADennis for us) that acts as like the historian/numbers guy and can answer any question?

I don't know. Just from memory, I think Shula did it much more. Two that I remember are Vlachos and JPW. Most of Saban's have ended up coming in during the summer when someone doesn't make it academically. Which, I'll bet, is the same thing that would have ended up happening with Philon.

    Vlachos.

    So far

    Good moves:

    JPW
    Vlachos

    Bad Moves:

    Petey Smith
    Jermaine Preyear

    Let's keep this going.

Preyear and Smith couldn't stay out of trouble. Also, I think Petey may have ended up coming in with everyone else.

  • guys all I am saying and have been is a greyshirt is not a full ride, it isn't... you pay if you decide to enroll, not enrolling doesn't change the fact you still signed as a greyshirt.... is a partial scholarship a full ride.... you pay for certian things and others are covered... how is a greyshirt different, cause if you do indeed enroll for a sememster or whatever, you still pay until you receice the full scholarship.....

I think Josh Chapman did too. Not 100% on that one.

I think Saban converted a greyshirt from Shula into a full ride when he got here. I think.

My point is that most of the time, I think every time, our guys haven't enrolled until spring. That means that would have paid nothing.

    Vlachos.

Vlachos was a gray shirt under Shula. I'm pretty sure Saban brought him in that summer. He never actually grayshirted. Danny Woodson Jr was suppose to grayshirt but he was brought in when a spot opened up. Petey smith was a grayshirt. Preyar was.

  • I'm rolling through the rivals commit list. What about Anthony Orr and Dexter McKeller in '09? Did either of them eventually enroll or go JUCO?

How about Jamar Taylor and Michael Ricks in '07?

Doesn't seem like there are many greyshirts based on what I'm seeing. For all the complaints, you'd think there are 5 guys a year getting left out.

  • kids flip, coaches flip. does not make a difference either way. I dont feel bad for him at all. hahahaha lil jimmy got GOT by the big red machine. Maybe one day recruits will start realizing this trend by the big red machine and turn the tables. I doubt it but it would be funny to see.

  • So the consensus is that greyshirts are neither good nor bad for the individual player? To me, that means that the outrage is really jealousy. Just my opinion.

If the kid's offer would have been pulled, I would understand completely. Greyshiriting does not equate to a scholarship being pulled.

still doesn't mean that a greyshirt is not a full ride, correct... that was the disagreement, not how one uses a greyshirt

Huh? Auburn wasn't about to touch Philon. Stopped recruiting completely when he flipped to Alabama. Our staff is not interested in Bama scraps that were once committed to Auburn.

  • Maybe they should be.... anyway, what I was saying is people need to quit worrying about this kid and move on. Life is full of tough choices and those who can make the tough choices end up succeeding in life and the ones who cry about them end up living in a box on main street. He had choices to make and left a school high and dry, thats the name of the game
