Might be his first year, but he seriously need to stop trying to be CB, cause he just comes across as CBjr.

    Whatever that means...

  • Really wonder if people have truly watched the game and know the numbers when Hakeem "The Dream" is NOT among the top 3 Centers. Dude played in the "Age of The Center" and was absolutely the best of the era as he dominated them all. Not to mention being the top shot blocker in NBA History and being in the top 10 for All-Time Steals.

For icing on the cake....he's one of the "few" athletes that has become richer after his sports career. Thinking A.I. and TO should ask "Dream" for some advice.

Shaq was more "dominant".......but Dream was the better basketball player.

Posted before and will post again......Dream is the DEAL.

I can only shake my head when I hear my younger brother's friends say Dwight Howard is better than Dream....No WAY IN H*LL.

    I'll just do Centers.

    1. Wilt 2. Kareem 3. Shaq 4. Russell 5. Hakeem

Ranking Russell #1 because of his rings is ridiculous. It's a team sport and he had by far the most talent on his team throughout his entire career. He was consistently dominated by Wilt every time they matched up against each other. 3-5 could go in any order IMO.

    Thats all balogna.

You know how many championships the Celtics won the year before Russell came along?

Its the same number that Charles Barkley and Karl Malone won in their careers. Zero. All that supposed talent, and thats how much they were winning. When Russell came to the Celtics they were a franchise that had never been to an NBA finals, much less win one. They had never won their division.

Russell gets there, and all that changes. The single greatest winner in the history of major American sports. Not only does he take an also ran program like San Francisco to not one but TWO national titles, not only does he then go over and win a gold medal in the Olympics, he also gives Boston its first title in his rookie year.

Russell was the single greatest defensive player and rebounder in the history of the game. The ENTIRE history of the NBA. Thats why hes the greatest winner.

O'Neal is a great example of a player that was as good as he was ever going to be the day he arrived in the league. He never developed a single aspect of his game, beyond what raw talent and size gave him. You want proof of this? Here are two things.

1-He never did anything about his free throw shooting.

2-His best year as a rebounder? His freaking rookie year. He never used his size or athleticism to become a great rebounder, and he was always a bad defender and mediocre shot blocker.

He spent more than half his career completely out of shape, making no effort to better himself or evolve as a player.

Its ridiculous the love this lazy idiot gets from modern fans. There is a reason that he got traded not once, not twice but THREE times in his career. He was worth more as potential trade bait than on the floor.

Dwight Howard sucks when comparing him to the all-time pivotmen. He might not even be in the top 20.

Russell was a stick figure compared to the Diesel. Shaq would have backed him down everytime and had his way with him. Shaq probably had 100lbs. on Big Bill.

Yeah...and Shaq the fat was still a bad defender and mediocre rebounder.

Dennis Rodman was a stick figure when compared to Shaq, but he was ten times the rebounder.

O'neal was one dimensional, and never improved. Not one iota in any facet of his game.

This is why I dont like to compare eras. Im sure Bill Russell would have lifted more and put on more weight in todays game. I think Wilt is the greatest. 7'0, 275 pure muscle. Incredible athlete. Would have dominated today

Shaq 7'1, 325. Had 60 more lbs. even on Wilt. That would have been fun to watch.

Hes actually sixth. And his scoring average is less than anyone in the top five. He played more than 200 more games than Wilt Chamberlain, and scored 3000 fewer points. Thats two and a half more seasons.

He also played against players that were physically superior to those Wilt played against.

No really a fair comparison between guys that played so many years apart in a "different" game. So personally I don't think either of you can win or lose this argument.

Why such Shaq hate? He's the great center of our era. The last of the true centers IMO. Your sticking up for a center we've never even seen play. And as much as I like Howard, I still see him as a sort of a hybrid.

I loved watching Shaq. Freak player, incredible size, strength, and athleticism. Loved the way would pivot and throw it down. He wasnt the most dedicated athlete, but so what. Theres a good chance well never see another guy like him. He would have put up the same numbers as Wilt if he played in the 60s

    In what way?

Who are the centers O'Neil played against at the height of his career? Lets look at those physically superior players.

From 2000 to 2006, the years when O'Neil was at the height of his powers, here were the second team centers in the league. The second best players at O'Neails position.

    2000-Alonzo Mourning
    2001-Dikembe Motumbo
    2002-Chrs Webber
    2003-Ben Wallace
    2004-Ben Wallace
    2005-Amar'e Stoudamire
    2006-Ben Wallace

Only one of these guys was a seven footer.......(Motumbo) Ben Wallace is the same height as Bill Russell, except Russell was about ten times the athlete as Wallace, who won a couple of defensive players of the year awards.

Because Shaq was inferior to what his talent should have made him. He gets love for being able to dunk,....and thats it.

Shaq came into the league in 1992. So you conveniently omitted that info in terms of the Centers that were in the league at that point.

We will never see another player like Shaq...exactly. The league has nobody like Shaq. Kobe gave us some of what we missed when Jordan left, and LeBron gives us some of Magic's flair. But there's no facsimile to Shaq, no big, young, prodigiously talented youngster who rattles rims and flattens 7-footers with his rump backing into the basket. Nineteen years is a long, long time to do anything that requires that much physicality, and Shaq's time as a player of consequence has been done for a minute or two. Howard (I guess) has the potential to be dominant. But I don't think he ever will be.

Is the center position truly dead?

I am not a Wilt fan, but he was more versatile than Shaq, and he did not spend vast parts of his career completely out of shape.

I am singling out O'Neal because he wasted more years, when the league had no other great center in it, by being fat, and not caring about improving his game. He was lazy, and could get away with being lazy because he was so much bigger and more gifted than anyone else at his position in the league.

Shaq in Phoenix, or the worst one yet, Shaq in Cleveland was a joke. Instead of taking 30 or 40 pounds off his frame and making himself entirely a defensive and rebounding presence, he got fatter and tried less and less on those two parts of the game.

Here is the one thing I do know......if they let that fight go on, Sir Charles, after the masterful takedown of the 7 footer, would have finished him off with some serious ground and pound. lol
