I really hope you are kidding.

Any man/woman who goes to fight for this country should be able to have a gun.

    What a freaking joke

I've seen two separate friends with PTSD get enexpectedly violent with friends and loved ones, sometimes to the point of mortal danger. IDGAF if you are the freakin pope, if you can't pass the mental background check, you shouldn't have one.

If he wrote "People with PTSD can't vote, will have severe travel restrictions, can't own guns, and can't hold most government jobs" then your comparison would be valid.

    I actually agree with you.

I also feel that if you have a felony on your record then you should not be able to own a gun.

There is that inherent risk with everyone.

  • PTSD has been around for a while.

IMO if you claim benefits for PTSD or another mental illness from a war you shouldn't be allowed to have any firearms.

Police Vs Vietman Veteran [Police Shootout...

**GRAPHIC** Deputy Kyle Dinkheller, Laurens County, GA, was minutes from being off duty when he encountered a speeding pickup truck going 98 mph. The deputy was an ICE (Interstate Criminal Enforcement) officer that dealt with traffic infractions, speeding and the occasional drug bust. This was a low risk or unknown risk stop for speeding. He radioed in the speeding infraction, made a U-turn in the median and pursued the vehicle. The driver, Andrew Brannan, stopped his vehicle, exited and started a crazy, dancing jig in the middle of the road while swearing at the officer and shouting Im a god-damned Vietnam vet. At first, he ignored Dinkhellers commands to step towards the deputy, which always began with `Sir. When he finally complied, he attacked the deputy and a scuffle ensued. The deputy implemented the use of his asp and ordered Brannan to `get back. This procedure was repeated, but after what appeared to be a second scuffle, the suspect returned to his vehicle and retrieved a M-I Carbine from under the seat. The first shots were fired nearly 50 seconds after Brannan returned to his vehicle despite the deputys commands. Brannan ignored the repeated commands to put the gun down and Deputy Dinkheller apparently fired the first shot. Brannan, a Vietnam veteran, advanced firing on the deputy. Dinkheller returned fire, but succeeded only in breaking a window in the drivers side of the pickup and wounding Brannan in the stomach. Using `suppressive fire, Brannan systematically, methodically shot Dinkheller in the arms, legs, exposed areas that would not be covered had Dinkheller been wearing a bulletproof vest, slowly executing him. Reloading his weapon Brannan continued firing with the final death shot to Dinkhellers right eye.

Well, since the discussion is only dealing with gun ownership, it fits.

  • Many different levels of PTSD. Some is very nominal and doesn't have a noticeable effect, some is extreme. What level should prohibit a person from owning a gun? Who evaluates a person and makes the determination?

That is part of my issue Smitty. They have done nothing wrong, but in the opinion of someone, they might do something wrong. It doesn't sit right.

It's called being proactive. You don't think mental stability should be a part of the requirements for obtaining a gun license?

To play Devil's Advocate, would you give a gun to someone you were pretty sure was suicidal, even if he/she haven't tried to kill him/herself? No, that's cruel.

Giving someone access to an instrument they can use to end/ruin their lives or the lives of other people, knowing there is a dramatically increased risk they will do is the same thing.

I don't have a problem with it if the person is deemed to be an immediate threat to themselves and those around them. That goes for any person with a mental illness really.
