You ignored the question. I'm honestly just asking your opinion.

Would you give someone who has gone online and said they have thought about shooting up a school a gun? They haven't done anything wrong.

Would you give someone who is a paranoid schizophrenic and is convinced the world is out to get them a gun? They also haven't done anything wrong.

Neither of those people have anything in their file beyond parking tickets. Should they be allowed to have weapons?

I answered honestly, and you ignored mine.

So I'm assuming, yes? You're okay with allowing someone who has made threats of shooting up a school to own a gun?

To be specific, that is illegal so no.

Thanks for not answering my questions.

There is nothing illegal about going online and saying you might want to perform a vague act of violence. That's freedom of speech. If you mention that you will blow up X building at X time, then that's illegal. Vague comments about school shootings are perfectly legal to make.

I'm not a psychiatrist or a psychologist. I have no experience with mental illness, so I can't tell you about levels of PTSD. I can tell you that letting someone who isn't mentally capable of owning a weapon buy one, only to ruin their lives and potentially the lives of other people, seems (at least to me) really stupid.

I have no idea if people with PTSD, even severe cases, qualify as incapable of carrying a weapon. I could probably venture a guess that a paranoid schizophrenic who thinks the world is out to get him and owns a gun is probably a recipe for disaster though, and apparently you think he should be able to buy a gun with no restrictions.

So are you okay with people bringing whatever they want onto airplanes?

Based off of what you posted, I was talking specifics, as stated.

So, are you good with taking the right to own guns away from anyone diagnosed with PTSD?

I already told you - I'm not a psychiatrist or a psychologist, so I have no idea whether or not PTSD makes you incapable of carrying a weapon or not.

How can I possibly have an opinion on the issue unless I know that?

Not sure if sarcastic, but I wasn't saying anyone's currently being drafted and sent to war. You said "No man or woman can be sent to war unless they voluntarily join the military" and I provided an example of a method where a man could be sent to war without voluntarily joining the military.

I understand that, but as of today it cannot happen. If it changes tomorrow that is a different story, but it's been a while since anyone was drafted. I'm still ok with the drinking age being 18 with a military ID.

Because its under the same umbrella and its relevant given TSA's consideration of changing its policy. If you allow anyone who hasn't committed a crime to own a gun, then why can't you allow everyone who hasn't committed a crime the ability to bring a gun or knife onto a plane?

Eh while I appreciate what soldiers have sacrificed to this country, they are still people just like everyone of us. Like you said, it's their choice to join the military so I'm not sure I'd be ok with them being granted special rights like the drinking age. I'd rather see us provide better health and job benefits upon their return from service.

How is it a reach? You're the one who brought up risk and I'm talking about assessing risk to individuals? I'm sure the majority of people who own a weapon would not use it on an airplane, but the risk from a few has caused strict security measures. I feel that allowing soldiers with PTSD could end in the same result, which is why I think we need to address the issue now.

They do join voluntarily. They also fight for our freedom. They should be able to have a drink if they choose to

Be serious, Jeff: Do you really believe military service trumps severe mental instability? No one is saying everyone with PTSD shouldn't have access to guns, we're saying that those with PTSD (which is not just a military problem) on the same level as paranoid schizophrenics and similar conditions probably shouldn't have access to firearms. You should have to prove a level of mental stability to own a gun, no?
