Love what Hoke is doing, but slow down. You guys had a very favorable schedule and caught all the breaks. Did anyone think VT would beat you in NOLA, not counting Buckeye/Hokie fans? ND saw that level of success in CW's first 2 years. Agree with the last part. What's your prediction on the upcoming season?

I simply oppose the word "rival", that involves tradition and respect.
A team currently dominant means nothing more than an obstacle to get by to reach the desired goal. A win, you take joy in the victory and move on, a rival..you savor it and great plays become legend. 4th & 9 was only six years ago, and the players on that great team counted it the greatest victory of their careers...over the National Championship. That is a rivalry.

This. Nortre Dame is the second most valuable football program in the country, per Forbes...it fluctuates between #1 and #2 every year in their survey. Texas is the most valuable CFB program in the country.
It is worth noting though...the size of the universities. That tiny school in the middle of nowhere, with no local recruiting base, that does not belong to a conference...is very wealthy and valuable indeed. Entitled? Maybe, but they certainly have strong competition from those that must band together as a conference to coattail on their need to boast of glory in numbers.
As for opponents some of you wish to label as potential "rival" of USC....when someone, anyone from the PAC who beats us, actually wins big outside the conference, wins more than two Rose Bowls in their history and a National Championship or contend for one over a span of a few decades...then they may be a rival.
Notre Dame is the only program we play on our regular schedule that has beaten USC more than anyone else in our history...and gone on to win National Championships and Heisman Trophies, etc. "Rival" is a respected word, not used lightly - maybe not to you people, but it is to us. That is my objection.

I remember all the glorious victories, and all those years of horrible losses and opposing fans shouting "Over-Rated U" "USC will never be anything again" "USC will never be relevant in football again" "USC is done"
Well, it's not done. Remember that Domers.

I agree with your sentiment but I think you are misplacing the point of Gators posts. He is not saying that the USC vs. ND game will lose any significance between your schools. Just the more ND twists in mediocrity the less that game means to casual fans, and kids picking schools.
ND misses out on the ESPN games because they don't have many must win conference games. Like USC vs. Oregon got massive hype last year, and was an awesome game. ND doesn't have many like that, when the chips are all on the table.
I take Michigan for example. ND is regarded as a bigger rivalry game for many than MSU, but the MSU game means a lot more to our season than ND. MSU lost to ND last year, but it didn't make a lick of difference in the B1G. Inter conference matchups that determine BCS games, or conference championships get a lot more hype on ESPN than your regular rival games, especially for a team like ND who hasn't been competing for anything the past couple of years.

Nailed it. The AD knows how brutal this season will be with the schedule we have. Fans might not believe this but 7-5 will be a good year, AD knows that. Expectations are brought on by fans when the AD starts listening then we're in trouble. BK has made some very questionable calls in a few games and TO's are a product of an undisciplined team, which falls on coaching staff. TO's are horrible, but when they happen inside 20 or the 20 yard line it's a complete momentum killer. Not sure on exact #'s but USF game had 2, UM game had 2, and USC game at least 1. There were more than that. USF and USC returned TD's from our 1 yard line. We were in every game besides Stanford. Heck USC owned us the first half, but we were about to tie it late in 3rd. Having too many TO's, plus a low amount of TO's forced, and worst PR team in country can and will kill a season. BK fuked around last year leaving Rees in most of the year. Now he's looking for a QB. His career hedges on finding a QB this year. If Rees is starting QB he's as good as gone, that's the mindset of many ND fans, weak arm and a tree in the pocket. Not conducive for a spread attack.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

For all the hate between us - and there is a ton of it, this is one of the most unique rivalries in CFB. When the game is in L.A., both alums/boosters/fans attend a joint benefit luncheon at the Bonaventure Hotel, sitting side by side toasting the rivalry and bring in guest speakers like Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, John Robinson and Lou Holtz to talk about the great games in the rivalry. I can't imagine Buckeyes and Wolverines sitting together and making champagne toasts to a long standing and respectful rivalry.
THAT is what rivalry means to Trojans, so pardon me if it irks me when used lightly or in connection to the next "flavor of the month" in conference.
