What is wrong with ND Football?

  • ErnieMcCracken said...

ND has an identity crisis. Somehow they have this vision of being an East coast school while stuck in South Bend Indiana which is hardly a cultural mecca at that. Northwestern located in Evanston is a way cooler and culturally diverse town. In some ways Pat Fitzgerald has the better job. Run a clean program, be competitive and have a job for life at a place where quality of life is through the roof.

The head coaching at lowly Northwestern is a better job? You must be insane. Maybe because Northwestern has no expectations of its football team every year? Northwestern is a football program that is mired in mediocrity and relative obscurity. While ND some still refer to as the ''University of College Football in America''. As far as history goes that's like comparing the Lakers to the Bobcats. The Red Wings to the Blue Jackets. Yankees to Pirates... only thing that makes sense here is that ND has an identity crisis.

ND Irish ate amazing every Saturday their on NBC. They almost make me dislike NBC that's kinda hard to do. If I were a 3* recruit living in Ohio.

And my only offers were Irish, Ohio university, Hawaii, Houston. I would pick Houston university.

And you would never be heard from ever again...kinda like that Greenberry kid

  • But its truthfully many factors, I wouldn't even focus on recruiting

Fact is ND campus lifestyle isn't a football players dream in most cases

Most want sweet weather and tons of chicks with a program that will give them a major that is code for show up and get a C, don't sleep and get a B+....

ND just needs to get with the times and I have heard they have made strides in updating their facilities, that is a good start for imo that always helps

I think that this is a big factor. Especially with the players from the South.

Hell I grew up there, moved when I was 18 and have zero regrets. It is partially why I've lived in nice weather ever since then.

Where exactly was my hate in that post?

And perhaps you should get yourself educated with the tOSU vs Michigan rivalry before making ridiculous claims. HBO did a documentary on the best rivalry in college football, and to say there is a lack of respect in the rivalry is dumb as hell.

Woody on Bo: "If 'Bo' is not a winner, I never saw one and I should know. He beat me the last three games we played. We've fought and quarreled for years but we're great friends."

Woody and Bo hated each on the field, great friends off it. There is tremendous respect between the schools. Get educated.

I honestly think you are hands down the touchiest most homer person on this board. Anything about USC that can be construed as negative you write an essay about how great USC is, and how much better they are than everything out there.

I have seen the HBO documentary, and read numerous books on the history of CFB, and of all the conferences in the country, the PAC and the BIG-10 have a strong shared history..beginning with the Rose Bowl.

You point out the respect between great coaches, in spite of the passionate hate between the fanbases. Do Wolverines and Buckeyes sit side by side and celebrate your rivalry?

I was shown a letter, on Michigan letterhead, sent out to alums that warn of driving a car with Michigan license plates into Ohio..warning of property damage. No different than any in state or regional rivalry.

I have just as ardently defended other programs, or disputed points made that are contrary to fact.

Because certain idiot fans determine what the rivalry is all about? If ND and USC were right beside each other I'm sure there would be some disgraceful acts also.

    Get off your soap box.

In some ways the Northwestern job is better than ND, he said. Not all ways.

The biggest is expectations: Going 7-5/8-4 at Northwestern will have you as coach for life. At ND, it gets you fired. Northwestern is definitely a big plus for job security.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Good point. No wonder ND wants to keep that NBC deal. Their viewership would go down by 50% as all the old fans wouldn't shell out the extra cash.

Of course, they are dying off fast anyways. Maybe ND should just bite the bullet and join a conference already.

I remember all the glorious victories, and all those years of horrible losses and opposing fans shouting "Over-Rated U" "USC will never be anything again" "USC will never be relevant in football again" "USC is done"

Well, it's not done. Remember that Domers.

I'm sure we'll be back sometime, when that is I have no idea.shrug, Also need to remember that USC had one huge advantage we don't. California is and will always be loaded with top notch talent. Indiana not so much. Good post though!thumbsup

It's also somewhat distrubing that the same guy that could turn Cincy's 5th string QB (Pike) into an NFL draft pick is struggling finding a guy to suit his system at ND.

Tell me about it. BK wanted and probably thought he could win big last year. He went with Rees after benching Crist. Rees got the nod due to experience and knowledge of the play book. I saw us for what we were 8-5. IMO, he should have allowed Hendrix/Golson to take their bumps last year. Instead now he's looking at 2 inexperienced guys while having Rees who can't run BK's offense. He's no threat to run the ball and his arm strength is lagging behind mine and that's no shit.

Honesty. The truth. That is all I want in responses to this thread. And before you are quick to say ''academic standards'' remember the Irish have basically had a top 10 recruiting class every cycle for the past 25 years. So in my honest opinion that is really not to blame. Coaches since '96? Yes, we have completely missed the mark. I think our coaching hires have been highly suspect since the 4th age. It's almost as if the board has no balls anymore.

No offense .... But it's your coach. Something about him isn't right. Jus sayin. If he does well this year, then I'm wrong, however; if his record is mediocre again this year; well, I would say prepare for a change of the guard.

This. Nortre Dame is the second most valuable football program in the country, per Forbes...it fluctuates between #1 and #2 every year in their survey. Texas is the most valuable CFB program in the country.

It is worth noting though...the size of the universities. That tiny school in the middle of nowhere, with no local recruiting base, that does not belong to a conference...is very wealthy and valuable indeed. Entitled? Maybe, but they certainly have strong competition from those that must band together as a conference to coattail on their need to boast of glory in numbers.

As for opponents some of you wish to label as potential "rival" of USC....when someone, anyone from the PAC who beats us, actually wins big outside the conference, wins more than two Rose Bowls in their history and a National Championship or contend for one over a span of a few decades...then they may be a rival.

Notre Dame is the only program we play on our regular schedule that has beaten USC more than anyone else in our history...and gone on to win National Championships and Heisman Trophies, etc. "Rival" is a respected word, not used lightly - maybe not to you people, but it is to us. That is my objection.

It must suck to be a SC fan when you feel like you have only 1 real rival. A rival who has been down for 20 years.

    ErnieMcCracken

  • zabba said...

Not necessarily true. Notre Dame has just about the same number of current NFL players as Alabama does (according to the mothership) so they're just as a finished product as Alabama's would be. It's the culture of ND more than the talent.

LSU has 40 players, so what does that make them

It means that LSU has more players in the NFL than ND or Alabama currently. Congrats. thumbsup2

It doesn't suck at all....we take great pleasure in kicking around our arch-enemy 11 miles from our campus, and there is plenty of competition, just not "rivals."

  • It is still real early, but BK needs to settle down the coaching staff, the recruits and himself during games. It sure looked to me like Rees tuned him out the last few games. They should have beat FSU and Michigan last year. USF? Huge amount of bad luck the whole first half.

Hell they beat Sparty last year.
