I'm white and my taste in R&B is better than yours. Usher? Drake? (whoever the f*ck that is) The correct answer is Al Green, Otis Redding, or Motown in general.

Plus my post had nothing to do with white peoples taste in music. Way to overreact.

  • Folk all the way to extreme metal and hardcore basically. I guess many of those bands are "progressive" in the genre sense.

    My current music list:

Ben Harper, City and Colour, Esperanza Spalding, Fleet Foxes, Funkadelic, Gift of Gab, Isis, Jello Biafra & The Melvins, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Bonamassa, John Frusciante, King Crimson, La Fin du Monde, The Mars Volta, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Miles Davis, Mos Def, Nomeansno, Refused, Rush, Sepultura, Slayer, Tool, The Tragically Hip, Warpaint.

Although I usually only listen to a few different bands at a time, and listen to albums rather than random shuffling.

This girl can both sing and hammer away on the upright bass, Esperanza Spalding...

    Esperanza Spalding - Overjoyed

One of the most exciting new figures in jazz, Esperanza Spalding is a wildly talented and stylistically eclectic young bassist, vocalist and composer. A past side-woman for Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Regina Carter and many others, Spalding has earned a well-deserved reputation for stretching the jazz idiom into thrilling new territory. Her new project, Chamber Music Society, floats the spontaneity and intrigue of improvisation over sweet and angular string trio arrangements. October 2, 2010 8pm Sanders Theater, 45 Quincy St, Cambridge, MA 02138 For tickets call 617-876-4275 or visit http://www.worldmusic.org.

How does a "too many white guys on this board" comment on a thread about music tastes not have anything to do with white people's taste in music? It's obvious you are commenting on people's taste in music in correlation to being white in your comment, so what say you? Get your head out of your own ass.

  • Favorite genre would be hard rock. Favorite artist? The Ginger Elvis, Josh Homme. Anyone central to Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, The Desert Sessions and Them Crooked Vultures is a musical genius in my book. Close second to Jack White, another friggin genius...

  • Hip-hop/rap.
My all time favorite artist is Eminem. Cudi, J. Cole, Jay-z, Kanye, Dre, and Drake are always being listened to as well.

I don't listen to as much hardcore as I used to. Old age I guess.

I have been listening to Everytime I Die's new ablum. I really like that.

I also like Defeater, Comeback Kid, and Thursday just to name a few.

    Rock, Blues, Country

Rock is unfortunately no longer mainstream. cRap and "R&B" have taken over mainstream music. The American public will buy ANYTHING if its marketed well. cRap is proof of this.

There is an equal amount of crappy "rock" music being produced. You just sound like a close minded 50+ year old.

I feel you, it's about the same for me. CBK is great. Turn It Round was one of my faves when I listened to hardcore all the time, and Broadcasting is one of the few hardcore albums I still listen to regularly.

Love her. I have a friend who's son was at Berklee with her, also a Bass player of some renown and she just blew the doors off the school.

He said it was ridiculous how good she is.

Tai Wilkenfeld, the young Aussie woman who plays bass for Jeff Beck is the Blues/Rock equivelant.

Unbelievable how good they both are.

If you saw Jeff Beck playing on that HBO Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert at Madison Square Garden that is her thumping in the background. I don't think she is even 25 yet and was playing with Herbie Hancock when she was 20

Good stuff man. In regards to the age thing I always find it weird to think about when Hendrix started "the trio": Are You Experience, Axis, and Electric Ladyland he was only 23 and still just a kid in some ways.

Spalding is also a feather in the cap for Portland, Oregon who's probably more known for producing grunge, punk, and electronic music (not that there is anything wrong with those genres obviously) than world-renown jazz prodigies. Although I think Spalding left for Berklee when she was 16 she got her start in Portland jazz clubs I believe.

The only thing I have against Portland is they unleashed Courtney Love on an unsuspectg world, and an even more unsuspecting Curt Cobain.

I lived there for a little while in 1994 and loved it. I bailed and moved back to Florida before winter though
