I like to think Barry is the best runner of all time. I'm only 30, so I won't really argue it much. And Barry probably wasn't the blocker Payton and others were, but the best runner IMO

And I disagree with this.
Sammy Baugh is the most complete player. He played in all 3 phases of the game, and excelled in all of them. Offense, defense, special teams.

Let's be honest, so did Ruth. On the one hand it's awesome a guy could pound beers and stuff his face with hot dogs at games and still dominate, but on the other hand, how bad was everyone else that he could do so and succeed?

Payton was the best that I ever saw personally. He could and did more on the field than Brown ever showed imo. Had Brown played more than 9 seasons this debate might be a moot point though too. Walter could pass a ball 60 yards, punt it 70, kick a 45 yd field goal, bench 390 lbs., leg presses with 700 lbs., and could walk from one side of the field to other side...on his hands. All this from a back who weighed less than 205 lbs. but with the most vicious stiff arm this side of Barry Sanders. He only missed 1 game in 13 years, which is unheard for any pro player, much less a running back.

Well then Jim Brown stole my answer to the O.P.'s question...first thing that pops into my head when Payton's name is mentioned
Seriously though, while Sweetness is my personal favorite of all time--I never saw a player play with more heart--I never saw Jim Brown play.
But those who have seen both are unequivocal in their assessments: Jim Brown = GOAT...at least as far as RBs go, anyway.

I think you are right sir. That probably describes Walter best Fightingtide....powerful...with a touch of a big, big, heart. I have looked many times over the years for a clip that shows him just running out of bounds. There may be one out there, but I have yet to find it. George Halas, the notoriously cheap, skin flint owner, and former coach of the Bears for 60 years, said back in the 80s that Walter Payton was the only player who had ever earned every single dollar that he ever paid him. This was the biggest backwards compliment he could have ever given to Payton. It must have meant something to Walter's teammates as well. 2 years later they won the Super Bowl

that is amazing. He was just a powerful man. There is a difference between strong and powerful. VERY few people are powerful, two that come to mind are Bruce Lee and Walter.

What makes Walter Payton
