  • I think for this to be accurate you have to weigh more heavily the upper two classes as that's whe most of your current starters likely are from

    I would say

    10% to 5th year
    30% to 4th
    30% to 3rd
    20% to 2nd
    10% to 1st

You assume most of your starters are in 3rd-4th year.

Wouldn't be true for Alabama. Many of our impact players (Yeldon cooper devall cyrus etc) are freshman.

Looking at Bama's depth chart. The starters(doesnt take into account who has most impact, which kids red-shirted or who gets most snaps)

    7 seniors
    8 juniors
    6 soph
0 freshman (yes Cooper and Yeldon play a ton) Cyrus is a soph.

The numbers seem to be in line

In an ideal world, most of your starters are upperclassmen. In a world still suffering from RichRod's recruiting, Michigan has to start an ungodly number of underclassmen, and pretty much every position on the 2-deep has at least one underclassman.

I assume you looked at Rivals to get those numbers - they're outdated.

The problems are most evident on defense:

At LB, there was a period of time where Joe Bolden (Fr.) was starting at MLB over senior Kenny Demens. Jibreel Black has been shifted inside so our starting WDE is now either Frank Clark (So.) or Brennen Beyer (So.). Our D-line rotates constantly, and as a result Ondre Pipkins (Fr.) and Mario Ojemudia (Fr.) see the field as much as the "starters" listed on Rivals. Our CBs are the result of injuries - Blake Countess (So.) is our #1, but he's out for the year. Raymon Taylor (So.) is also now starting over Courtney Avery. Finally, Thomas Gordon is pretty much in a platoon with Jarrod Wilson (Fr.).

On offense, it's not as bad, but the depth is where you see the hit:

At TE, AJ Williams (Fr.) is our main blocking TE, and Devin Funchess (Fr.) is our main receiving threat. Both see more time than Moore (Sr.) or Kwiatkowski (Sr.). Our backup QB is Russell Bellomy (Fr.). Our offensive line has only 7 scholarship OLs left from the 2007-11 classes. As a result, here are the backups in the 2-deep:

    LT: Erik Magnusson (Fr.)
    LG: Joey Burzynski (So.)
    C: Jack Miller (Fr.)
    RG: Kyle Kalis (Fr.)
    RT: Ben Braden (Fr.)

As you can see, our upperclassmen are decimated, and we're leaning very heavily on young players across the board.

    Slightly off ...

    SR 11
    JR 7
    SO 4
    FR 0

But 11 of the 18 upperclassmen are on offense, where they are largely "spread" players who do not fit a pro style offense very well. As they graduate over the next two years, they will be replaced by upperclassmen actually recruited to play in a pro style system.

    Same for Oregon.

    Top passer- freshman.

Top rushers- 6 of top 7 are soph or frosh. All except Barner

Top 3 receivers- frosh, soph, soph.

    Top TE- Soph, Frosh.

Defense is a different story but with the exception of our o-line and kenjon barner almost our entire offense is sophomore or younger.

    Interesting post though.

Technical starters or not, our leading rusher and leading receiver are true freshmen. They are the starters as far as I'm concerned.

Denzel Devall and Landon Collins are working out great! Kenny Bell would actually also have done well at LSU, but Mett probably couldn't get him the ball either.

    LSU QBs. lol
