For me it might be Homeland, season one. I'd never really watched a tv show that was anything like it, so it kept me guessing the whole time.

I think there were good themes to be explored, but I just couldn't stand any of the characters. Ziggy was an idiot, Nick and Frank were too predictable, and the entire season suffered from having to attempt to live up to Season 1.

Yeah I can see all of that. I guess that is what I liked so much was the subject matter more than the actual execution. Still a very solid season and.better than 99% of other shows. Just hard to live to the standards set.

Seasons 2 and 5 of The Wire were simply victims to the show's excellence. I agree that, had the standard not been set by 1 and 4, seasons 2 and 5 would have been lauded as excellent tv. "Better than 99% of other shows" is spot-on.

I agree with the earlier poster who said Season 3 of The Wire was their favorite. I also consider it to be the single best season in TV history.
Another good one that hasn't been mentioned is 24 Season 1.

My favorite season of any show is Law and Order, season 1. They attacked tough legal issues week after week, and did the show amazingly.
(Note: I'm a huge fan of shows that don't require me to follow an ongoing storyline, so shows like L&O have always been more interesting to me.)

Loved season two of The Wire. Agree with Aussie about it being very underrated. But I understand its criticism. Seasons 3 and 4 are neck and neck as the best season of all time. It's hard but I'd give the edge to S3 because of the rift between Avon and Stringer. The kids and Marlo's come up was great tv as well, though.

As a lawyer, watching Law & Order is like my med-student girlfriend watching Grey's Anatomy. Behind all the drama and story-telling they actually do get into a bit of substance, but most of the time content accuracy loses out to whatever will get better ratings.
I enjoyed that show a lot more before I went to law school.
