What will you pay due to "fiscal cliff"?

  • shortcbaseballa said...

Again, there has been no concessions by the Republicans. The Democrats have made concessions.

What's funny is recent polls about who is causing the Fiscal Cliff are showing that the american people believe the Republicans are standing in the way. Huge change from last year.

    They can only blame themselves.

The R's ran a campaign platform of not raising taxes. They are now willing to=concession

Not some of them. A subset of them decided to screw over Boehner in the name of principle. I don't think that group will be willing to do anything IMO.

This will have to be the largest subset of RELATIVELY moderate democrats and republicans that can get together in the House to pass something.

Correct, which is why Obama will need to come up with spending cuts to meet the R's. I think the R's have gone nearly as far as they are willing. IF he wants something passed, and I personally think he does. He doesn't want to start term 2 with another wall street slide, etc.

Think about it this way. Obama has conceded a 1:3 of what the expected revenue would be and almost 1:1 on spending.

  • None of you guys get it.....eff the Repubs and the Dems....they're all a bunch of crooks anyway. Do away with the two party system because each party caters to the extremists within their own party. Term limits are a must as well. Being in congress shouldn't be a career especially given the ridiculous benefits. You wanna fix health care? Make every member of congress go on Medicaid and we'll see how fast this crappy system get's fixed.

I think the Dems are mistaken. Dou you think R's are worried about tarnishing their brand? Obama's got to cut spending for this to work.

Yep but these Dems don't see it that way. It's class warfare for them. The little guy cant catch a break bc these evil rich guys. Putting the 1% at Clinton's tax rate runs the government for 8-11 days. I would go back to the Clinton days in a second if it ment you cut the spending back to it as well. Problem is we have baseline budgeting and every goverment sector sees a 5-10% increase each year and we are left hearing Dems and Reps argue. They aren't cutting shit they arent even freezing spending they are arguing about how much the increase is going to be.

    What do you disagree with?

    1) A baseline budgeting doesn't necessarily increase every agenecy's budget

    2) Baseline budgeting doesn't necessarily mean spending will increase every year, especially considering that the amount of spending and where it is coming from hasn't been discussed or agreed upon

    3) Your assertion of taxing the rich is a straw man argument. It's not about trying to run the government or a be-all, end-all.

This whole argument is about making cuts and raising revenue in a way that solves two things:

    1) doesn't cause a recession
    2) cuts future deficits and keeps confidence in treasuries and ratings

Thinking that government is going to magically, or even purposefully, shrink to a size that I think you'd like isn't on the agenda of anyone except a few Tea Party/Libertarian congressman.

Boehner and Obama aren't sparing over the size of government, they are sparing over their constituents and re-election campaign fundeds.

It's sad, I know. The best thing we can do though is hold them accountable and hope we can polish this turd as best as possible.

Do you happen to know what year we saw are highest rate of tax revenue? If its about revenue don't tax the people that create jobs.

FWIWs I'm for a fair tax or even a flat tax. Politicians should not waste the majority of their time on this.

If taxing job creators was out of the question, then no one would ever be taxed.

By the way, I'm pretty sure it was 2000.

Which leads me to my main point, revenue ,like anything, is more complex than nominal numbers or rates.

Majority of U.S. to blame both sides for ‘fiscal cliff’ failure: Poll | The Ticket - Yahoo! News

From the blog The Ticket: If Washington lawmakers fail to reach a deal to avoid the a majority of Americans will blame Democrats and Republicans equally, according to a new NBC/Wall Street Journal survey. Fifty-six percent of adults surveyed Dec. 6-9 said Democrats, including President Barack Obama, and Republicans would be equally to blame if no deal is [...]
