What's The Biggest College Football Rivalry?

  • My bias says ND-USC, mainly because I grew up in L.A. as an Irish fan, this doesn't make it any less of a rivalry game though.

But I make it a point to not miss UF-FSU and UM-OSU.

  • Canes fan here and I say in the 80's and 90's it was Us vs. EVERYBODY!! Seriously think about it, Oklahoma, Penn State, Notre Dame, Florida State, Florida, Alabama, Texas (yeah, one game, but longhorn fans remember that in their backyard), I mean anybody in the free world that played us thought they were our rival!! LOL!!

  • I acknowledge OSU-UM has meant more nationally because those are two of the best programs of all time. We don't have that in the Iron Bowl but that's all Auburn's fault.

However, as far as a rivalry that means the most to the fans and one where the fans absolutely hate each other 365 days a year, it's the Iron Bowl. No pro sports, don't care about b'ball or baseball or any other sport (as a whole).

As far as relevance which some of you saying the IB doesn't have, the winner of the game has gone on to win the national title the last 3 years. One team has come in ranked #1 or #2 in the country the past 5 years. Back to back Heisman winners. It will be a bloodbath this year but hey, we're relevant.

Irrelevance is being ineligible or not able to stay on the field with teams like Alabama.

    Ohio State-Michigan
    OU-Texas
    Florida-FSU

We never considered you a rival. We played in the Sugar Bowl twice in a few seasons, that's it. Miami-FSU used to be great though. Pretty lame now.

    Yep

UF/FSU was the game in the 90's. Constantly battling for national titles, in the top 5 every year, just some awesome teams. It hasn't been good lately with Florida owning FSU for years and the last couple years Florida being down. It does look like both teams could be getting back to elite though, we'll see.

I hope Saturday is a good game. I worry about Florida being able to score but their defense is legit and FSU hasn't necessarily played anyone too great yet.

  • Texas vs Oklahoma. Seriously, there are many better games to watch, but how many rivalires in college football have resulted in someone losing their nuts (well, almost losing them)?

  • i was about to say that the Iron Bowl is hardly a rivalry because Alabama is so dominant. but i looked up the all-time series record and noted that Alabama leads the series with an overall record of 41–34–1.

i thought alabama would have a more overwhelming win-loss ratio. can someone explain this to me?

Well, every dog has his day, so to speak. Auburn has had some good years, Alabama has had some bad years... Also, just as with any rivalry, anything goes on that day. Tensions are higher than normal, plays are more likely to be botched, etc. At least, my two cents. I can recall some years when AL was under disciplinary action too that might have hurt them

  • The Ohio State/Michigan rivalry has intrigued the country for a hellova lot longer than any other rivalry in CFB. Even those that couldn't care less about CFB, know about that rivalry.

It all began in the BIG-10, the architects of modern college football, the coaching tree that extends all over the country (yes, even Saban comes out of that Ohio coaching tree), the SEC has only been relevant (save for Bama) a few decades NATIONALLY. Helps that both Ohio State and Michigan are so huge, they could be small countries..equals a ton of alumni that make a ton of noise.

Of course, I think the USC/ND rivalry is the greatest in CFB..simply because it had no reason to be, but stepping away from that, it has to be Ohio State/Michigan #1.

    Iron Bowl Ohio State-Michigan OU-Texas Florida-FSU

I could agree with that. Obviously AU and Bama are both in the same state. The thing is our state is split 65-35 for Michigan and Sparty. Ohio is almost entirely osu. Their pro sports are all terrible so pretty much everyone in that state is an osu fan.

BUT, there are many infiltrators. South of lansing (where msu is and the bulk of the state population is), for the most part everyone is a Michigan fan but like i said there are some infiltrators. From about Findlay, OH and north there's a good amount of Michigan fans. Toledo, OH is split 50/50 as it's right on the border. I actually grew up in Michigan just north of Toledo.

The two states actually had a fight over who would get the Toledo strip. They ended up getting it but we got the Upper Penninsula in exchange (we won). That's also one of the ways Michigan got their nickname. The Ohio residents thought the Michigan residents were nasty so they called them wolverines.

  • Well, it's a well known fact, Sonny Jim, that there's a secret society of the five greatest teams in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in college football, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows. It consists of Bama, the Irish, the Trojans the Wolverines and the Colonel with his his wee *beady* eyes, and that smug look on his face. Come eat my Chicken! AKA Ohio State
