What's The Biggest College Football Rivalry?

  • If this is the case for longevity, then you have to throw in the Red River Rivalry.

    Ohio football is big.

    It's not Texas BIG.

    Neutral site makes it meh. Played during the middle of the season? Even more meh. Horrible, commercial name for it? Very, very meh.

  • There is no such thing as a true national rivalry. The closest thing to it would be Army-Navy. With that in mind, I always enjoyed the national pride behind the game but never cared for the game itself until I enlisted in the Navy. I watch it every year now and I will be attending my first Army/Navy football game this year...my first year as a Chief.

    The only time a rivalry is truly national is when it has national implications. No-one outside the pacific northwest will watch the civil war but everyone would have watched had last weekend not happened. There was a time when Bama/Tenn was considered one of the best rivalries around but we haven't both been relevant at the same time for quite a while so it has taken on less significance. Bama-LSU now has greater appeal than even the IB because of what is on the line.

    The ND/USC game had a chance to be really special this year but USC decided to suck.

    Reid vs Elam was solid last year

    I think that will change going forward though, we're both gunna be pretty good for years to come

    You can bet Fowler and Elam gunna get into early with somebody. And Easley acts a fool no matter who we play

  • OU-Texas and its not close.

    Iron Bowl has only been nationally relevant very recently, but traditionally hasn't been important to anybody outside Alabama.

    OU-Texas has national implications nearly every year, and the gameday atmosphere is second to none.

    USC-ND would be my choice if ND did anything the last twenty years.

    OSU-UM would mean something of the B1G was competitive nationally. But it isn't, so it's not.

    UF/FSU was the game in the 90's. Constantly battling for national titles, in the top 5 every year, just some awesome teams. It hasn't been good lately with Florida owning FSU for years and the last couple years Florida being down. It does look like both teams could be getting back to elite though, we'll see.

    I hope Saturday is a good game. I worry about Florida being able to score but their defense is legit and FSU hasn't necessarily played anyone too great yet.

    You act like we were not down during Florida's little streak.

    Neutral site makes it when it's at the Texas State Fair with beautiful women as fried food everywhere around the stadium. The original Cotton Bowl stadium is sweet, if a little dumpy.

    I go to school up here, and the women suck. They're even worse at OSU and UM. Women aren't everything, obviously, but we like girls where I'm from so it's a nice bonus.

    Oh and you ever seen a 40 yr old Texas woman? It takes a circus tent to cover her. Those fried twinkies take s toll, son.

    Texas / OU will always be meh. Midseason, neutral site and stupid name.

    I could agree with that. Obviously AU and Bama are both in the same state. The thing is our state is split 65-35 for Michigan and Sparty. Ohio is almost entirely osu. Their pro sports are all terrible so pretty much everyone in that state is an osu fan.

    BUT, there are many infiltrators. South of lansing (where msu is and the bulk of the state population is), for the most part everyone is a Michigan fan but like i said there are some infiltrators. From about Findlay, OH and north there's a good amount of Michigan fans. Toledo, OH is split 50/50 as it's right on the border. I actually grew up in Michigan just north of Toledo.

    The two states actually had a fight over who would get the Toledo strip. They ended up getting it but we got the Upper Penninsula in exchange (we won). That's also one of the ways Michigan got their nickname. The Ohio residents thought the Michigan residents were nasty so they called them wolverines.

    Auburn is in Georgia...

    This makes sense coming from someone that thinks Ohio St v. Michigan is a great game. Meh, meh, meh. College football is more than burning couches, son.

    i was about to say that the Iron Bowl is hardly a rivalry because Alabama is so dominant. but i looked up the all-time series record and noted that Alabama leads the series with an overall record of 41–34–1.

    i thought alabama would have a more overwhelming win-loss ratio. can someone explain this to me?

    We didn't play for a while until State legislature stupidly got involved and forced us to play again. Had we always played we likely have a huge edge.

    Texas/Oklahoma... Tellin' ya. National championships? check. Players from same high schools and towns? check. History for about 1,600 years? check. Proximity? check. Neutral site for no advantage? check. A state fair? check. Battle over same recruits? check. Civil hatred? check.

    I don't think anybody compares. National landscape, national championship implications, etc etc etc....

    The same can be said for Texas/OU. The only difference is that the winning team often goes on to win a MNC. Two top teams in the same year makes for a better rivalry. That is why every national poll puts Texas/OU ahead of Michigan/Ohio St.

    Every national poll does not do that.

    Being played during midseason completely takes Texas / OU out of the discussion. A loss in the middle of the season does not hurt a team nearly as much as one on the final week. It means more when it's played the last week of the regular season.
