Where were you...

  • 11 years ago today? I was in 4th grade and had no clue what happened until I got home and saw it on tv...our teachers definitely didn't want to shock a bunch of elementary students

  • I was getting ready to give a speach for my final Management class in college. Normally I would never have been awake at that time of day.

  • I was closing on my first home. I bailed out, waited 6 months and got a much better interest rate. Not trying to be funny but I knew what the market was about to do.

  • French class in 8th grade. Another teacher walked in and spoke in French and made hand gestures to explain what happened (we had no idea what they said, it was our second week of French). In music class about an hour later someone told me what happened and I realized what they were speaking about in French class.

  • Ground zero. Was in a meeting in the WFC. Watched the south tower fall, live, from less than ten blocks away.

  • I was in Grade 4. My teacher all told us what happened while crying, no one really understood what it meant though. In fact I had no idea what the WTC was at the time.

  • I was in 2nd grade. I remember not finding out until the end of the school day, my friends older brother who was picking him up told us that there had been a suicide attack. I had no idea what this meant as my friends brother didn't seem worried nor did he mention people dying so for some reason I thought a suicide attack was a positive thing. when I got home I kept giddily repeating to my mother that there had been a suicide attack, and that's when she told me what really happened.

  • Unlike many of you on the board, I was 29 and me and my wife both had taken the day off. My wife was pregnant with our first kid and we were going to the doctor for her check up and also we were going to find out the sex of the baby. We were at home and the tv was on but neither of us were paying attention but they kept talking about it so I sat down. It was the eeriest thing...Not 2 minutes into watching the 2nd plane hit. My initial reaction was WTF??? When the first plane hit, I think I was like everyone else in thinking it was a accident. You knew when the 2nd plane hit it was more. I remember a feeling of shock and uncertainty.

To this day I can barely wrap my head around it. It was like a movie. A Godzilla movie. Others I know had a far, far more horrifying viewing experience though... On the 60-block walk to where I was living at the time I linked up with a couple of friends that were traders at S Smith Barney... They had a dead on panoramic view of the people that were leaping to their deaths. Deeply rattled (still) would be the mildest of understatements.

  • Middle school in New York. School was locked down, we were all kept in our classrooms, and teachers would occasionally come in to talk to certain students. Only a couple parents of kids in my school died, but there were so many kids who were terrified all day just because they hadn't heard from their parents. Cell phone towers were all jammed, so we were all sitting in class praying that no teacher came in and called our name.

  • At home in Alabama. My daughter had just finished breakfast and was playing as I folded clothes and watched Good Morning America. I had plans to go shopping and have lunch with a friend.

I don't even remember now how long I sat there, stunned, before my phone started ringing.

Damn....It would be hard to even begin to imagine.

I have a few friends who lived in NY at the time but their stories were nothing like that. One friend had to walk 10 or so miles home and he did with at least 20 people. He said nobody said a word.

  • I don't want to sound like I am joking, but I was in 5th grade. We had the hottest teacher ever and she just told us she was pregnant. We thought the world was over...
Two days later I was being a dick and taking names since I was helper. My mom, who was a teacher pulled me out of class and told me we were under attack. I had to tell my teacher that..

    Worst week ever

  • Was in 9th grade - 2nd period woodshop class. Teacher always had a tv going running news, always gave him a hard time about watching the news and not Sportscenter. I was in the classroom part of the shop doing homework for another class and was the first one to see the coverage - ran into the shop and yelled what happend, no one believed me. The father of a girl I graduated with died in the South Tower, her birthday is September 11th.

  • I was sitting in a cubicle. My buddy was listening to Stern in his office and came out to tell us a plane hit the WTC. He assumed it was a small plane and that it was an accident.

Our whole office saw the replay of the 2nd plane hitting the 2nd tower on the tv in our conference room.

    We were all sent home.

It's weird, but I remember less about the tower dropping (I guess because it was so surreal) than I do about that walk. It was blazing hot out and I was in a wool suit. That and about a minute before the collapse my dad called from CA and was yelling, "ARE YOU WATCHING THIS!? WHERE ARE YOU?!" And all I was able to get out was "I'M RIGHT UNDERNEATH THIS..." before all cell service (and a good portion of residential service) dropped - for the next six or seven hours easy. It was totally unintentional but still feel guilty for putting my family through that hell.

  • Sleeping while I could (my daughter was almost two months old). My mom called freaking out and told me to turn on the TV. Right after that the second plane hit. I remember crying and thinking about what this would mean for my little girl.

Crazy to think there was no social media at that time..

  • Got to work early, on our way to our customers houses we found out. I'm a window cleaner for mostly residential accounts - when I arrived at our customers house all we could do was sit and watch tv. She didn't even want us to clean her windows but she wanted us there so she had someone to talk to. She sent us home after 3 hours of staring at the tv, wondering what would become of that morning.

    Yeah, I said it.

  • 11th grade trig or cal, can't remember which one was 11 or 12.

we had a runner (main office student assistant that went around and collected the attendance sheets) come in who knew about the first plane hit and said new york was under attack. my teacher had been talking about her son, saying he was a maniac and would attack you at random. she thought he was joking about her son, and started laughing.

he then said turn on the tv, we did, and watched the rest unfold until the bell rang. i went to the library for the rest of the day and watched it along with several other kids/teachers. didn't go to any class all day until last class, which was football. for the first half of what would be football practice, we sat and talked about life, about what had happened and about what to do regarding the game this week. we decided that we weren't going to let terrorists determine our lives, and that to honor those who fell we'd continue living as free americans and play the game.
