I didn't take what Willie said as a Jerry joke. If it was, as you pointed out, it doesn't make sense at all.

He added a "#3" to your list of reasons in your post that he quoted.

  • The reason I say that the draft shouldn't carry much weight is because things outside of production come into play. For example, if Russel Wilson was taller, he would have been the 3rd QB taken. But measurables matter in drafts, so he slid down below inferior QBs. Then he gets into the league and kills it. Same thing with Brady... if you look at his college career, it was very good. But he slid down because he was slower than most linemen and he had an average arm. Draft positions lie.

USC was Tailback U and PSU was Linebacker U and so on.

We know Iowa and Wisconsin are big on O-line production, SEC schools produce those war daddy DTs and so on.

That's what is going to be fun as we go through and see what school has produced what at each position.

Surprised to see that Purdue was omitted from your list, Steve (or did I miss it somewhere?).

With Kyle Orton and Drew Brees currently on rosters, I thought that was a bit of an oversight.

Okay, maybe Purdue is no longer the "cradle of quarterbacks"....but that is one position they, over the years, seem to have done right.

As usual, I just ignored the quote part and assumed he didn't edit it.

Yeah, terrible joke. He was only 5 years late.

His top 15 all had at least 2 QBs drafted in the first 3 rounds. I thought the same thing as you though, and I still think Purdue holds more weight at QB with recruits than most of those schools.

  • There is one simple fact that one can simply not ignore. Every qb who has started a game at that position at MI,beginnuing w Elvis, minus the first 2 years of the RR era has gone on to play in the NFL. The streak will continued with Denard, albeit not at that position. That is a whole hell of a lot of players, and I am not all that certain that any other school can boast such a record. Hell, I'd even bet on it, given the wager to be a modest 300 or less.

I really don't care what criteria you use, i.e., Sanchez and Leinhart haven't exactly set the world of fire. It's my guess no other school since Desmond won the Heisman-and that's been awhile, has sent as many qbs onto the next level and that's about as good as it gets. And let's not forget a certain qb by the name of Guiterrez who did receive his degree from UM, although he took his talent to a lesser school because he could not displace Henne, served as one Mr. Brady's backup in Bean Town. Further, deponeth sayeth not.

sorry I don't know the coaching history of PSU or the coaching history of Jerry. But he was still around the school at that time and touching children so whatevs. Henne still could have been creeped out.

Yep. That's why I laughed at Michigan's position on the list. If you are talking the last 15 years, they should be #1, hands down.

  • I'm going to try to make a point but since I'm not knowledgeable on many other teams' NFL caliber QB production, I'll rely on sheer homerism. And I'm making this disclaimer now so it's known well in advance: I don't believe Ohio State belongs in the conversation for QB U. No way in Hadestown. Not even close.
With that said, Troy Smith won the Heisman trophy and led his team to a BCS victory, as well as a NC appearance one year later. Terrelle Pryor led his team to 3 BCS bowl appearances, including 2 BCS bowl wins, as well as 2 time BCS bowl MVP. Braxton Miller led his team to an undefeated season as a true sophomore. But, because of draft history and draft projection, should I simply resign myself to think that Ohio State has not had a good QB in over a decade? That's the only point I'm trying to make. College production means more to me as a fan referring to a "college" as "Position U" than a group of successful NFL QB's who happen to be alumni at the same school. I might be wrong in that line of thinking, but the NFL means nothing to me. It's not a blip on my radar.

Jimbo is one of the best QB coaches in the country IMO.

Sent Ponder first round in 2011

EJ will go 1st/2nd in 2013

    Then Coker in 2015/2016

    Winston 2016/2017?

JJ in 2019? (LOL now I am really dreaming)
