Over half of the Hispanics in the US are white.

Could you expand on that, I've never seen the box for a white hispanic

  • they had to put George Zimmerman and the word "white" together somehow .. otherwise it wouldn't be quite as racist as they want it to be. I also find the "walkouts" in miami highschools absolutely HILARIOUS! Are we really going to call that a "protest" or a bs reason to skip school?

Spanish people in this country are considered “White Hispanics”. Being Hispanic is not really a race more of an ethnicity.

Last I checked it was a race. I live in an area with over 50% hispanics, not sure how they are white. The races in the US as I know them are caucasion, black/african american, hispanic, and asian.

The U.S. considers it a race but it is not. Considering people who are of Spanish decent a race is like calling people of Italian decent a race. The average Hispanic is this country is probably of Native American/European mixture, African/European mixture, or a combination of all three. Or they are just European which is where the “White Hispanic” term comes from.

Yeah, I'd already posted that before I saw your link. To be honest, I'm not following. Perhaps its that I've got a newborn and haven't slept much, but how are over 50% of the hispanics in the US originating from Mexico falling into the category "white hispanic". According to the definiton provided: having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa" who reside in the United States. So how do Mexican Americans fall in this category?

  • It's clearly his own fault. After all, all blacks/Hispanics wearing hoodies are to be looked at with caution. Signed, Geraldo.

Seriously, he said something to that extent. He better be fired by tomorrow.

I get your point. My original point (and i ALMOST specified) about having every or more opportunity was directed more concerning our government/laws than a persons home life. However I still don't give that much credence to the argument about home life. There are way way way too many example of people overcoming horrendous circumstances to achieve great things. It might be an uphill battle but it's a battle that can be won nonetheless.

I know there are examples of this. But they are exceptions. Just like, there are White kids who have every opportunity in life and fail, and they are poor minorities who have to struggle to get where they are at and succeed and vice versa. You said that Black men have the same opportunities as White men in this country. This is not true. If you gave them the same exact socioeconomic conditions as their White counterparts, then I would agree with you.

  • he (and his family) apparently seems to have no problem defining himself as 'Hispanic.' Also, as someone who lives in southern California and works with and has numerous Mexican friends, the vast majority of Mexicans are by no means 'light skinned' and definitely don't see themselves as 'white.' Spanish Hispanics and those of primarily Spanish decent in Central and South America may indeed see themselves as 'white' Hispanics, but that perception is usually limited to the upper class ('elite') who in some cases don't want to be associated with the common Mexican, Chilean, Honduran, Colombian, etc... and if isn't a race problem why is the NAACP involved?

Because some people identify as having Mexican ancestors, but consider themselves white. Here is an example.

Christiy Turlington's mother is Bolivian. Yet she is considered a "white" person. White Hispanic.

They don’t. They fill out the census and call themselves White Hispanics because they really have no idea what they are. They just know they are not Black or Asian.

That makes sense, because while undoubtedly there are examples such as the one going buck provided, over half my employees are hispanic and they all self identify as hispanic first, then country of origin second. I was struggling to figure out how the percentage got that high.

Once again, I was speaking more from a society/government standpoint then home life. I think not having a father is a way greater detriment to a kid then having holes in the sides of their shoes. My grandfather grew up as poor as they come. He is now one of the wealthiest men around. Every single sibling is dead. Most alcohol/drug related. He chose to bust his a$$, hold down 3 jobs, invest wisely, & eventually it all paid off. He could have very easily used the same cop out his brothers and sisters did... Instead he quit b*tching about it and did something to change it.

Do you think a black man growing up at the same time as your grandfather would've had the same opportunities?

Because of the effects of colonial times it is sort of Taboo to associate yourself with your Native or African heritage in the Latino/ Hispanic community. That is why a lot of them just put down white.

They couldn't have pissed in the same bathroom or drank from the same fountain if that's what you are asking...

They could work the same jobs, make the same wages & buy the same properties though.

You really think a black man and white man would have the same opportunities during the Civil Rights Era? And prior to it?

I never said that. I just said even if it was, it doesn't make it some huge racial issue for the rest of america to be concerned with.

I guess that's where we differ. When a black child is shot by a white man (whether he is Hispanic or not) for being black, or looking suspicious in a gated community (while the white man calls him "a[n] [expletive] coon," or wearing a hoodie, or all of the above, it is absolutely a huge issue.

Meh. I think the whole Father/positive male role model thing is overrated IMO, and a kids socioeconomic conditions would have a greater impact on his/her life then not having a father.
