You shouldn't be (in this case).

How? You are saying because a disproportionate amount of blacks are poor there isn't a level playing field?

The playing field is level, just seems like people hang on race as a crutch for their own failures.

Where did I say that it should be used as a crutch for people’s failures? It’s not level because you don’t get to pick where you go to school, the family that raised you, or the neighborhood you grow up in. The average minority is more prone, to encounter these problems than the average White person in this country. This in no way should be used as a crutch for why people don’t make it in this society, but you would agree that for one group its easier for them to make it to the point to be able use these opportunities than the other?

Yeh and whose fault is it they are born into poverty?

Eventually people need to stop making excuses and just do what they need to do. If you take your education seriously and work hard you won't be poor end of story.

That’s a good comment to make when growing up in Toronto you probably didn’t have to encounter any of these problems. It’s easy to judge and tell people what to do when you are on the outside looking in.

I didn't say you said that. I am saying too many people in general blame circumstance for their failure.

I would debate that. I don't think whites who come from a poor situation have a better chance at success as opposed to blacks. Both whites and blacks struggle to make it out from poor backgrounds, but I really debate it has anything to do with color if you happen to make it.

Because Toronto doesn't have any poverty? Not sure if serious. I personally didn't deal with these circumstances, but I know many people who started with nothing who have gone to great schools, and some already have good jobs.

This is about the average white person and the average black person. The average minority is born into harder circumstances then the average white person.

Never said Toronto doesn’t have any poverty. Just to my understanding its better off than a lot of the inner cities in the states. Like Detroit, which I see on almost an everyday basis. Again never said, that it should be used as a crutch or that it’s not possible just that it’s harder.

This wasn't what I was talking about. I was talking about equal opportunity. Everyone is given a fair chance at success, regardless of color of skin.

Debating who is born into worse circumstances is irrelevant IMO, because not much can be done to change that.

Economic disparity between blacks and the rest of america is there, whether you guys acknowledge it or not. Success breeds success, if you don't have people working hard around you, you won't. The biggest factor for this inequality is the family dynamic, you guys should check "the negro family: the case for national action"

Some aspects of this are true, but at the end of the day, it's up to that individual to make the most out of his/her situation. Trust me, I know, I came from the gutter, but I'm good now. I think it's a combination of faith, hard work, and networking.

If they can’t pick the circumstances they are born in, then it’s not equal opportunity. Having a horrible education, is not a fair chance, and don’t tell me they can learn if they want to because you know that’s not true.

I don't know it's not true. I went to fantastic schools in Toronto, some kids learned some didn't. I don't know anything about the school system in America.

Equal opportunity is all about discrimination or lack there of. No one gets discriminated for jobs because of their skin color anymore. Thus equal opportunity.

But the road to reach the point to be able to use these opportunities is a lot harder. Thus it’s not equal. I would say that, that job discrimination has gone done a lot in the last couple of years but I wouldn’t say that it’s completely gone.

Agreed obviously there are still some idiots who discriminate but for the most part it's been eliminated.

I guess we have different opinions of equal opportunity.

That’s fine, agree to disagree. Just IMO, what good are opportunities if you are never able to reach them.
