Who were the losers?

  • I get asked this question a lot. Who were the signing day losers. Ultimately there are none because every coach is happy with the potential of the players coming to his program.

But from a perception standpoint, just talking signing day itself (or the days leading up), there are some losers. If it's mass last-minute defections, finishing second on multiple prospects, seeing your rival mop up and you limp to the finish. All of those things can impact the perception of your finish.

And perception is important in college football moreso than any other sport. Perception impacts how teams acquire talent and roster build (recruiting) and also how the champion is determined (voting in polls).

So given that, who were the losers IYO?

  • I would throw Texas in there simply because Mack Brown tried to explain his shortcomings by deflecting criticism.

But the Horns had the best OL class in the country and need OL.

Then again, they also desperately need a quarterback and failed to address it.

Texas didn't get one quarterback this cycle?

  • Rutgers

That class looks painfully average, they only landed 2 of the top 25 kids in NJ and didn't get a late bump from a guy like Moore or Muhammad.

Rutgers? Don't they basically get a painfully average class every year?

No they got Tyrone Swoopes, but it was pretty obvious they needed another one.

I remember they snagged a Jersey kid from us a couple years back named Savon Huggins. I think he was a running back.

Yeah there was some talk they may get Moore, but I think that was just concern on the part of South Carolina after the Gamecocks didn't shut it down on the in-home.

    But...

Moore committed to Rutgers, got the SC offer, then de-committed....only to sign with Rutgers? Didn't add up. Think he would have never de-committed if he wasn't planning on switching in the back of his mind. Also, Vanderbilt finished second to RU and never felt like they were getting him and USF felt like he was a huge Gamecock lean after the Bulls did their in-home.

Muhammad could very well be a recruitable student athlete again next cycle, so it's not over, over.

Yeah times have not been good in Iowa City of late. That program goes in cycles, though. They will cycle back up soon IMO.

I personally couldn't include UGA even though I know what you are saying. It was critical that they hit their numbers this cycle and they did. They also enrolled 13 players early that will help them maybe as early as next season in some cases.

The Rutgers 2012 class was very good. Darius Hamilton and a slew of good in-state players.

I just remember that one year JC where they had 3 or 4 top notch recruits commit during the army all-American game and I was like whoa They are going to be top notch for good.

  • Tennessee.

    Really pathetic class.

I would take Vandy's class over theirs.

This is who I thought of. A couple weeks ago they were poised to really jump, leading for Lawson, possibly getting Vonn Bell, maybe pushing for Tyler Boyd.

UGA, USC, and Miami are interesting choices as well.

  • Texas - mack cant recruit anymore. lost a ton of instate guys

miami - threat of sanctions are killing them but still should get more than they did. getting stacey coley was the only thing that saved them from a disastrous signing day

UGA - perception that they cant get instate kids hurts them badly. bama, auburn, clemson, and others all came in and cherrypicked kids out of their state.

USC - kiffin is a douche and really made a fool of homself and they paid for it. also an embarassing end to the season kicked them hard

FSU's OL recruiting - we needed at least 6 players and ended up with only three and we whiffed on some high profile targets
