Good article. I've taken some time to think this over, and while I'm not terribly pleased with the hire, there were certainly worse options. I hope Coach Malzahn can find a DC that will field a competitive, hard-nosed, fundamentally sound D. If he can do that and maintain a level of discipline, we'll be alright.
I like that phrase "Oregon of the south" too Barton. While I realize it's a huge job ahead of him with many obstacles, that is essentially what we would become under a successful Gus Malzahn regime. Could be fun.

Looking for the next Nick Saban is a pretty two-dimentional way of approaching the hiring process in my opinion. Hiring Malzahn is a more 3D approach and I think it's the right approach.

Good job Barton, I like the hire also. We had Gus at the TD club here in memphis, and I was extremely impressed with him as I was with you my friend. Keep up the good work.

I am not convinced either way about Gus. For the short term, I think he is the type of guy that can come in and have a chance to win or at least compete at a higher level than they did this year with the players that are on campus. He does need a couple of WR to step up, but I would imagine his style can turn either Frazier or Wallace into decent QBs that can provide more production that they did this year.
It will be interesting to see how much changes and/or how much he is allowed to change.

I think it's hard to argue that Petrino wouldn't have been really successful as far as wins and losses. If that's all you're hiring on, he's probably the best hire out there but there are more factors at play and I get not wanting to take on that baggage. I like this hire better than Smart. Smart is going to be a great head coach but I think Malzahn may be the better fit for this situation.
