Why do people ignore oversigning?

  • Macdaddy7930 said...

Bama hasn't had a medical hardship in three years and Bama averages three transfers a year for the last four years. Last time I checked, the Fighting Heart-attacks had just as many.

Ohio St. fans should be thanking Saban and Alabama, instead of bitching and moaning. He's the only reason why Urban is currently your coach. Did Urban win two Natty's while at UF? Yes. However, won one before Saban arrived and his second in Nick's second year, while Bama drastically over-achieved in year two. Saban dominated Urban's best UF team in year three and Meyer saw the writing on the wall, hence the heart-attack. When Saban dominated his ass the very next season, Urban knew he wasn't going to win the SEC like he had before Saban got there. Congrats on having a leader that runs away at the first sign of adversity.

So on behalf of Alabama and Nick Saban, you're welcome.

I just wanted to quote you, so if tOSU fans missed it the first time, they wouldn't the second time around.

    CUM is a quitter.

This always cracks me up. Urban is 1-1 vs. Saban. You people act like Saban has beaten him repeatedly and Urban just couldn't take it any more. Meyer just needed to get his life back together, and that had nothing to do with NIck.

Does Sumlin own Saban just because he beat him once?

Saban is 2-1 against CUM. The last two meetings were beat downs, and Tebow cried.

Here are the numbers. Go ahead and spin them anyway you like.

Over the past five years Bama signed 142 players.

Here's what some other schools signed during the same period...

    ND, 106 (36 less than Bama) Florida, 109 (33) Georgia, 110 (32) Ohio State, 113 (29) LSU, 125 (17)

How many of those players made it on campus and actually enrolled? LULZ for using five years.

From 2009-'12 recruiting classes, Bama has signed 103.

    2009: (Signed 28)
Transfers (6) - Bowman, Marrow, Moore, Sentimore (suspended then transferred), P. Smith, Woodson
    NFL (3) - Carpenter (JUCO), Dre K, T. Rich
    Medical (2) - K. Kelly, McKeller

    2010: (Signed 26)
Failed to Qual (3) - Belue, Dial, A. Hill
Transfers (4) - Carswell (suspended then transferred), C. Grant (AU), Malone(suspended then transferred), P, Sims (GT)
    Grad/Other (2) - B. Lewis, J. Williams (baseball)
    NFL (1) - Menzie (JUCO)

    2011: (Signed 23)
    D. Carter (kicked off/transferred), Douglas (RIP)

    2012: (Signed 26)
    Dixon (transferred), B. Hill (JUCO)

Out of the 103 signed, 25 are no longer on the team bringing the total to 78.

Edit: We have seven guys that are fifth year SR's from the '08 class, bringing our total to 85.

    From 2008 Class: (Signed 32)
Grad (7) - Billingsley, Boswell, Hightower, Upshaw, C. Jordan, Love, Smelley
DNQ (3) - Bolton, Lewis, Murphy = All went JUCO
JUCO (1) - Cody had only two years eligibility
NFL Early (3) - Dareus, Ingram, Julio
Trans (6) - R. Green, C. Jackson (GT), S. Jackson (FCS), Lawrence (JUCO), Scott (FCS), C. Smith (WV)
Baseball (3) - Harbin, Hood, Ray
    Medical - Matchett, Neighbors
    Kicked off team - Preyear

Bama averages 3 transfers per year and less than one medical per season over the last five years. The majority of schools have, at least, three transfers per year. How many did Ohio St. have before this season again?

Bama can't give a medical hardship...only the NCAA can grant that. If someone has a problem with that rule, they shoudl take it up with the NCAA. They are the only authority for approving it. The onyl person that can initiate it is the player and it must be validated by a Medical Professional.

I honestly don't know why this isn't used more often by programs. There are kids who deserve to be on scholarship who aren't in a position to play football ever again. Does anyone really object to Tyrone Protho getting a medical hardship scholly? There are others that might be less known and their injuries not as severe but they qualify and it releases them from their obligation to football and alows them to complete their education. Oh the horror!!

    But...but...the REC controls the NCAA

  • The same (or nearly the same ratio of signees applies to Bama/UGA. In fact, UGA started the season with 68 scholarship players. However, a tipped pass on the last play is the only reason ND was not playing UGA in the BCSNCG.
After the SEC's new signing max rules have had time to level the field, the SEC non-oversigners (UF/UGA) will be the national objects of derision. We are looking forward to it.

Over the last four years Alabama signed more then 40 more players the Notre Dame. Keep the best and cut the rest seems like a plausible explanation for domination.

Does it feel that good knowing your winning with a stacked hand?

  • People ignore over signing because there are much more sadistic things going on,
like the evil Lane Kiffin asking 1 recruit to delay his enrollment for 1 whole semester.

You know cutting 4 or 5 guys every year (one way or another) who had already given 1, 2, or even
3 seasons worth of blood, sweat, and tears for their school is just roster building and is good
roster management. There's nothing wrong with this.

But telling a high school recruit that he still has his full ride scholarship and his spot on next year's team,
but he will have to start school a few months later than he originally planned is disgusting.
Morally and ethically repulsive. Only a scumbag like Kiffin would do such a thing to a young man.
How could he treat a kid this way?

This is the crime of the century! It's time to make that sonbitch Kiffin pay for being
a loser scumbag liar of a coach, get a rope blue board, let's get'em lynchmob

Nothing wrong with medical hardships. The question becomes, why does Bama have so many more? Like I said above, that's the thing that makes me pause, maybe it's bad luck and a 100% legit.

I am going to need to see the numbers showing that Bama has more medical hardships. Without numbers you are just talking out of your ass.

Yes, kill the Kiff, grap your pitchforks and let's go.

I used to like Lame, until the other day when he made that recruit delay enrollment for an entire 3 months!
Saban would never sink this low and sell this kind of snake oil. Saban is the King of integrity.
Saban puts the kids first not winning.

Saban doesn't sign 20 kids this year when he knows he only has 9 seniors and maybe 3 early draft entrants.
That would leave him with 8 players to Kiffin. Saban's a man of honor, he won't Kiffin 8 players.

  • I used to think Auburn had the worst fan base but after visiting this board for over a year my opinion has changed.

OSU by far has the most delusional, ignorant fan base in all of college football. OSU plays in the weakest of the 4 big conferences yet they have managed to accomplish absolutely nothing in the past 10 years.

The MNC they won against Miami was the result of a horrid call by a ref and should not even count.

Yet their fans would lead you to believe they matter, that they are a threat to win a championship.

They are an average football team playing in the shittiest state in the union with the absolute worst fans.

    LOL,

You absolutely did not see me make that argument. You have me confused. I'll make a one week ban bet with you that you can't find me saying anything like that. Shouldn't be hard since it was just supposedly last night.

I also wasn't trying to argue with you. Why would I care about Lane Kiffin? We don't play USC and he's just not that good of a football coach. He's the least of my worries. I'm calling you a crybaby because you are constantly bitching about the SEC. I mean you don't even play us. It makes no sense.

This article provides some numbers, just saw this for the first time a few days ago.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/stewart_mandel/02/04/saban-oversigning/index.html

Here's the thing though, as some Bama fans have pointed out Saban hasn't had many, if any at all, medical hardships for a few years now. Frankly, I think he's cut back on stuff like that for two reasons. One, he doesn't need to b/c he's now got that program built into a well oiled machine, and two, he was starting to get criticized for it with articles like this, although I think the first point was the main reason.

What I would really like to see is the same recruiting rules across the board. First, every conference adopts the 4 year guaranteed scholarships with a few outs, such as a player getting into trouble and what not. From there I say you keep the 85 limit, and only allow a max of 25 commits per year, including early enrollee's with absolutely no wiggle room. And to curb this crap of taking more commits than you have room, I say you're also restricted to only accepting as many commits as you have room for. Wanna take a chance on a kid who might not qualify academically, that's fine but if that kid doesn't make it then to bad. Any level headed thoughts on my recruiting ideas?

You can ask Jarvis Jones why SoCal's doctors wouldn't clear him and he turned into a badass at UGA.

Your post makes no-sense at all. The philosophy behind Saban and Butch Davis while at UNC, is forcing these medical hardships on players who aren't very good or didn't perform at the level they were expected to, it free's up that players scholarship for someone else.

You wouldn't try to make Jarvis Jones (one of the best players on any team) take a medical hardship. That's assinine.

Being honest, Saban has probably cut back on medical hardships because he's run out of players that faced the grave medical problem of being warm bodies the previous staff signed.

Good possibility. I do think Saban is as good as they come in identifying players for his system.
