that's my opinion at least. I think the biggest edge they've had over all the other conferences as a whole has been in the trenches on defense. They've had bigger, quicker, and better defensive lineman than the other conferences. Simple as that.
Using the Rivals database (sorry, 247 doesn't go back far enough) and just looking at the 5*'s DL's the SEC has signed vs. the other conferences, welp...it's a pretty big disparity. I realigned the conferences FYI...yes I know..but whatever. Also put guys that played DL in college as DL's. Brandon Graham and Woodley for instance were listed as 5* LB's, but both played DE.
From 2002-2012 these are the 5*'s defensive lineman. The JUCO rankings database on Rivals only goes from 2005-2012.
SEC- Jonathan Mapu- UT (2002), DelJuan Robinson- Miss State (2002), Joe Cohen- UF (2003), Jarvis Moss- UF (2003), Brandon Miller- UGA (2004), Derrick Harvey- UF (2004), Jerrell Powe- Miss (2005), Al Woods- LSU (2006), Carlos Dunlap- UF (2007), Torrey Davis- UF (2007), Ben Martin- UT (2007), Omar Hunter- UF (2008), Sheldon Richardson- Mizz (2009), Gary Brown- UF (2009), Chris Davenport- LSU (2009), Ronald Powell- UF (2010), Sharrif Floyd- UF (2010), Dominique Easley- UF (2010), Jadeveon Clowney- SouthCar (2011), Ray Drew- UGA (2011), Anthony Johnson- LSU (2011), Jonathan Bullard- UF (2012), Dante Fowler JR- UF (2012), Raven Gray- AUB (2008- JUCO), Walter Fisher- UT (2006- JUCO), Greg Smith- AUB (2006- JUCO), SEC TOTAL: 26 5* DL
B1G - Gabe Watson- UM (2002), LaMarr Woodley- UM (2003), Justin Ostrowski- Wisc (2003), Brandon Graham- UM (2006), Robert Rose- OSU (2006), Baker Steinkuhler- NEB (2008), Will Campbell- UM (2009), Will Gholston- MSU (2010), Noah Spence- OSU (2012), Ondre Pipkins- UM (2012), Adolphus Washington- OSU (2012), B1G TOTAL: 11
ACC - Kai Parham- UVA (2002), DeMario Presley- NCST (2004), Melvin Alaeze - MD (2005), Callahan Bright- FSU (2005), Ricky Sapp- Clem (2006), Marvin Austin- UNC (2007), DaQuon Bowers- Clem (2008), Marcus Forston- MIA (2008), Jacobbi McDaniel- FSU (2009), Donte Moss- NCST (2009), Mario Edwards- FSU (2012), Eddie Goldman- FSU (2012), Markus White- FSU (2008- JUCO) ACC TOTAL: 13
PAC - Haloti Ngata- ORE (2002), Jeff Schweiger- 'SC (2004), Everson Griffen- 'SC (2007), Devon Kennard- 'SC (2009), Owamagbe Odighizuwa- UCLA (2010), Chris Martin- CAL (2010), Ellis McCarthy- UCLA (2012), Aziz Shittu- STAN (2012), Simi Kuli- ORST (2008- JUCO), James Aiono- UTAH (2009- JUCO), Louis Holmes- Arizona (2006- JUCO), Gabe Long- Arizona (2005- JUCO) PAC TOTAL: 12 (Chris Martin left CAL for UF almost immediately though)
B12 - Brian Pickryl- UT (2002), Rod Wright- UT (2002), Franklin Okam- UT (2004), DeMarcus Granger- OU (2005), Gerald McCoy- OU (2006), Eddie Jones- UT (2006), RJ Washington- OU (2008), Alex Okafor- UT (2009), Jackson Jeffcoat- UT (2010), Malcolm Brown- UT (2012), Ryan McBean- OKST (2005- JUCO) B12 TOTAL: 11
BEZ - Nathaniel Robinson- Rut (2003), Darius Hamilton- RUT (2012) - Lol.
ND- Victor Abiamari (2003), Ishaq Williams (2011), Stephon Tuitt (2011) - (Aaron Lynch was just on the cusp of 5*)
Yadda yadda yadda, I know stars don't matter (keep kidding yourself if you really believe that)....
But SEC is King, and will remain King as long as they keep loading up on elite defensive lineman. Hell, if you counted some of those 5* 3-4 OLB's that Alabama has that are sort of stand-up DE's that 26 number would be closer to 30.

neither were 5*'s in the Rivals database. Tim J not being a 5* on Rivals was kind of a joke imo.
I have definitely noticed what Jimbo has been doing with DL recruiting. Very very impressive. If FSU isn't an upper echelon team in 2-3 years like an LSU then it will be because of coaching, not talent. JMO.

yeah, I think you win National Championships in college football with strong defense. This isn't the NFL- where it's set up to be a non-contact passing sport. You still need defense, defense, defense to win. FSU is loading up in the trenches on D, and that's where it all starts.
SEC has been doing this for the last decade or so, and that's why they have been the dominant conference as a whole. LSU, Alabama, UF, Auburn, Georgia...all have had very strong defensive front 7's and now South Carolina is starting to really get strong in the front 7 as well through recruiting. It all starts up front.

We literally went 8-9 deep on the DL last year. That's the difference.
Our line would wear out the opposing OL because there's no drop off when we would sub guys in.FSUgoNoles24 said...

Why has the SEC won 6 in a row MNC? Elite Defensive Lineman.
