Why has the SEC won 6 in a row MNC? Elite Defensive Lineman.

  • that's my opinion at least. I think the biggest edge they've had over all the other conferences as a whole has been in the trenches on defense. They've had bigger, quicker, and better defensive lineman than the other conferences. Simple as that.

Using the Rivals database (sorry, 247 doesn't go back far enough) and just looking at the 5*'s DL's the SEC has signed vs. the other conferences, welp...it's a pretty big disparity. I realigned the conferences FYI...yes I know..but whatever. Also put guys that played DL in college as DL's. Brandon Graham and Woodley for instance were listed as 5* LB's, but both played DE.

From 2002-2012 these are the 5*'s defensive lineman. The JUCO rankings database on Rivals only goes from 2005-2012.

Yadda yadda yadda, I know stars don't matter (keep kidding yourself if you really believe that)....

But SEC is King, and will remain King as long as they keep loading up on elite defensive lineman. Hell, if you counted some of those 5* 3-4 OLB's that Alabama has that are sort of stand-up DE's that 26 number would be closer to 30.

Jimbo Fisher ( the guy you question about if he is right for FSU ) said the difference is the dline play.... look at what he has been recruiting at FSU... elite Dlineman.... might want to add Tank Carridine and Tim Jernigan to the FSU list....

  • We literally went 8-9 deep on the DL last year. That's the difference.

Our line would wear out the opposing OL because there's no drop off when we would sub guys in.

neither were 5*'s in the Rivals database. Tim J not being a 5* on Rivals was kind of a joke imo.

I have definitely noticed what Jimbo has been doing with DL recruiting. Very very impressive. If FSU isn't an upper echelon team in 2-3 years like an LSU then it will be because of coaching, not talent. JMO.

No doubt... most don't understand the talent wasn't there when he took over.... and the development of the players was at an all time low.... Tank was a JUCO and think he was either a high 4* or low 5*

yeah, I think you win National Championships in college football with strong defense. This isn't the NFL- where it's set up to be a non-contact passing sport. You still need defense, defense, defense to win. FSU is loading up in the trenches on D, and that's where it all starts.

SEC has been doing this for the last decade or so, and that's why they have been the dominant conference as a whole. LSU, Alabama, UF, Auburn, Georgia...all have had very strong defensive front 7's and now South Carolina is starting to really get strong in the front 7 as well through recruiting. It all starts up front.

    supermario9

  • Only 7 of those SEC guys even had eligibility left when the school they chose won the BCSCG.

It goes much deeper than that and none of them lined up for any of the last 3 BCS champions.

I would point more towards coaching.....and not just HC, but the coordinators and position coaches. The coaches in the SEC get paid exponentially higher than those in other conferences and that is very attracttive.

  • That is definitely the biggest part of it imo, but you can't have a shit OL and no running game and expect to win a title.

Great front seven, good running game, timely coaching, some luck = 6 natl titles in a row.

Eric Norwood, Cliff Matthews, Ajiboye, Melvin Ingram, Devin Taylor, Travian Robertson, Clowney....yeah its no secret why we have been much better the last couple years. We have always cranked DBs to the NFL (look it up) but didn't do much good without those guys up front. Chaz Sutton was a 4-star DE, is still very good and productive, and he can barely get any playing time.

Also hand-in-hand with this is S&C coaching...those DL are where they make their money. Travian Robertson put on about 75 pounds at USC, everyone knows about Ingram, etc, etc...

  • Lsu and bama's OL honestly wore down every team they played except each other.

By the 4th, every team both lsu/Bama played quit. Just check the season 2nd half rush stats.

So yes, power on both lines is what made both so great, even without a QB (lsu)

I agree that is the second equation... no doubt that is the ingredients to winning... but the question was what separates the SEC from everyone else... and to me it is the elite dlines. There are some very good olines the SEC has faced in OOC and Bowl games, but those olines can't hold the SEC dlines.....

haven't noticed quite the descrepancy in OL recruiting as I have in DL recruiting. That one is more equal.

Where SEC seems to be crushing the competition is front 7, specifically DL.

    supermario9

  • Alabama has won 2 of the last 3 national titles and were a quarter away from playing for another in 08. To my knowledge, Bama has signed zero 5* DL under Saban. The LB's that line up on the DL from time to time weren't 5*'s either. Just an observation because we do rack up top 100-250 DL, they just aren't elite by ranking standards. We sign elite recruits at RB, LB, DB, OL, even WR and we have the best coach in America. I guess that helps....
