Why is Equestrian a part of the Olympics?

  • CptAUmerica21 said...

high school and college is all I know, so I may be wrong about the olympics.

But you usually have to draw out of a hat so it's random. That way the riders cannot buy their ribbon and are truly judged above saddle.

Hey man you seem to have a back ground in this so what does this involve? Eventing and Dressage?????

    TIA

  • Seriously, I think I have zero in common with majorpain. He grew up on a plantation with a black nanny playing equestrian. What year are you from?

  • 100% certain that you bring your own horse to the Olympics. It is sure as hell nothing easy though. Don't bash something you've never done. By the way, the NASCAR comparison was terrible because they are absolutely athletes. I've never driven a car 200 mph for three hours while being an inch away from someone else's bumper. All while having no side mirrors and hardly any "lane lines".

Why do we have shooting in the Olympics? The gun does all the work.

+1. If you have never ridden on an english saddle, or attempted to jump a horse.. you probably should stop talking now.

Would love to see the way you walk after a few hours on a galloping horse without developing any of the required muscles.

Always interesting to see how people develop such strong opinions about things they know nothing about.

Who said anything about a trainer? I bet you couldnt even trot in an english saddle yet alone jump one.

  • In no way is equestrian/dressage/etc. easy, don't let that idea pop into your head. That said, I agree, it's not a competition centered around the athletic achievement of a person, and I wonder what that has to do with what the Olympics is all about. However, we also have sports like shooting and, I may be totally off base, but I think chariot racing used to be an Olympic sport, so... shrug

My mother used to be big into Dressage and this guy gets it, it's not easy. She tried to get me into horseback riding, but I took more to Western than I did English.

Dressage isn't a walk in the park either. Both horse and rider go through years of training to reach this level of competition. Op has no idea what he's talking about.

I love CFB and football and general, but the general consensus on tBB I've found is that football players > all athletes 100% of the time and football players would dominate every athletic event (or related) in history, including equestrian, swimming, and NASCAR.

dressage is done on an english saddle.. its most definitely not easy even if your horse would somehow do the entire course on its own. there is a relationship between the horse and rider built by uncountable hours of practice. Beyond that there are very precise technical things that the average person wouldnt even know to look for. I grew up around horses, it goes a lot deeper than sitting on an animal and letting it do its thing. I would bet that even if you guys managed to "hang on" to one of these horses (in an open arena, no jumps) you wouldn't know the first thing about posting and end up infertile within minutes (guys, lol). Take it to a canter and I would be willing to bet (again) the majority of you would be winded in minutes.

This isnt some western shit with a huge saddle with a handle and slow gates... an english saddle is a very short stirrup with no saddle horn.. much like what is used on a race horse. I suppose jockeys arent athletes either.

Lets talk about curling next.. thumbsup

Car drivers, horse riders and gun shooters aren't athletes imo. They are however involved in competitive competition.

The Olympics is about athletics. If were gonna trot around on horses than alligator wrestling should be a sport. Much harder and physically challenging.

I'm pretty sure the Olympics are about whatever the ancient Greeks decided they were when they invented it, and they thought chariot racing should be included. So... yeah.

Gone, but horseback riding is not, which was also an ancient Olympic sport, in the form of racing. Though I'm still not really sure what your issue with its inclusion is. Most of the current Olympic events weren't in the original games and not to mention the existence of a Winter Olympics. But events involving horses have been around for centuries, so I'd say it's fair to keep that tradition going. Plus, I'd wager that riding a horse is more athletic that target shooting or archery, if only marginally.
