Why isn't it down by contact in the NCAA?

  • Never known the reason.

  • Why does the clock stop after a first down? Why one foot in bounds instead of two? Just part of college football.

We've changed plenty of college rules over the years. I'm just wondering why this one hasn't been changed yet. I can understand 1 foot vs. 2 feet; at the end of the day, the NCAA needs to be "easier" than the NFL rules wise (to a point). But where I see the natural progression from 1 foot to 2 feet, I don't see it as plainly when it comes to the down by contact rule. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

I would definitely like to see this rule changed.

On this point, I have never understood how the qb is able to take a knee in the NFL to end a play. I can understand a kick/punt returner being able to do this in the endzone but not the QB.

Any player in the NFL can take a knee to stop a play. They are allowed to give themself up by going to a knee as well. You see it a lot at the end of a half in which a WR goes down so they can get a TO for a FG or something.

There is a difference in down by contact and giving oneself up on a play.
