Why recruits don't matter as much....

No way dude. You can't tell me that football in states like Hawaii and Nevada haven't gotten better in the past 20 years. How many Somalians played 20 years ago? How about now? What about states like Maryland and Virginia? There are 1,000s of solid kids out there now as opposed to a handful from yesteryears.....

All I know is those Somalians need to bulk up a little bit if they're going to play D-1 football.

    1) Sign great players. 2) Have a great staff

    Sounds like a good plan.

I think every school should follow this plan

Middle Tennessee St should be competing for the national championship in the next 5 years

Agree. I predict in 20 years the Ethiopians will be the next great college football players. Bulking up on rice milk and bean curd.

Kent St and San Jose St, top 10 teams eventually?

What drugs are you on and where can I get some?

    This.

Just because the little guys crack the top 25 occasionally does not mean they're Blue Bloods all of a sudden.

  • Bama, UGA and ND have done incredible jobs on the recruiting trail, stacking 4 and 5 stars each year

If you don't do this, you don't play for the national title

    History shows this

Yes, you need a good staff too.... but if you don't have the best players you don't have the best team

Its that simple, its all about taking the best talent you can find an turning it into the best team you can mold.... that is the name of the game, recruiting is easily tied for 1st as the most important part of winning the sears trophy

Yeah I mean Tulane went undefeated and finished in the top 10 in 1998. This sh*t happens from time to time. It doesn't mean San Jose State or Kent State are going to be perennial powers from now on. Kent State, just like Tulane, will go back to sucking a whole lot very soon.

The AP top 25 poll from 20 years included such powerhouses as, Syracuse Stanford Tennessee Colorado Washington State Ole Miss NC State North Carolina Hawaii Boston College Kansas Mississippi State Fresno State Wake Forest

Didn't you mention something about schools like Stanford, Hawaii, Fresno State...

No I didn't. I mentioned Hawaii football for high school and the rest of you morons are missing the point. There are more better players now, period. You don't think so? Show me the BIG bowl win of Utah over Bama 30 years ago. How about 40? How about 50?

You guys are in denial. You can't get over that the little guys are ALL catching up. Rutgers??? Really??? You guys think they were there 20 years ago? They're in and out of top 25 on a consistent basis now. Yeah, Kent st won't be there, but Ohio will next year or an Akron.

You guys must think basketball is just dominant as well and VCU, George Mason and Gonzaga are just lucky ducks every year to get there.... LMAO!! WTF Up!!!

That's not true slap happy. Has nothing to do with Miami, it has to do with the Utah's and Boise States of the world you dope. Man you're retarded.

  • I agree that there is far more parody today than there was 10 or 20 years ago, but the flaw in your theory is that being ranked in the top 25 doesn't mean that you're one of the best 25 teams in the country. Take Notre Dame for example. They are ranked the #1 team in the country, but I haven't heard, nor do I know, one person that thinks that they are the best team in the country. Kent St, N. Ill, etc would all most likely get beat by USC which is unranked. It's just a system that is full of flaws. Why should a team that loses in week 1 be penalized any more than a team that loses in week 10? They shouldn't. Does it mean that the team that lost in week 1 is better than the team that lost in week 10 because they are ranked higher?

  • You wanna bet me right now that the final four is not comprised of the top 4 in the nation right now? EVERY YEAR there is a sleeper that makes a MAJOR run and not just get through the first weekend. There's 10x the amount of elite athletes out there now.

but these lowly teams are quietly winning more and more bowl games than before. Can you imagine in yesteryears a bowl with Kent State vs Michigan St??? MSU would be favored by 28 1/2!! Now, it's MSU by 8.

Look at the lines for the 1 seeds in hoops vs the 16 seeds. What were the lines 20 years ago? They were 33 and higher. Trust me, I know, I coached d 1 hoops and gambled on it when I didn't. Now the lines are 18 and sometimes down to 15. That's crazy. The number of athletes is SIGNIFICANTLY higher and you HAVE to have better coaching now. You miss out on a "big time" prospect, so what. On to the next....there's 1000's out there...

Probably a bad example, considering that my Spartans were terrible for decades. But this year, yeah MSU would be a slim favorite.

Key word is ALMOST. You play 12 games, so you lose 2 (5 to 1 is about 83%) and you DON'T get to the title game.

Well, at Alabama you get both.

Oh you mean schools that beat up on nobodies, have never won a title and won a game once upon a time against a uninspired Bama team with nothing to play for ?

Got it, this thread is just stupid

What has Utah done now that they play in a real conference, besides nothing ?

Apples and Oranges. In NCAA basketball the best players are never there for more than one season and that's because they have to be. The days of elite players staying until their junior years are long gone. The playing field has been leveled more so in basketball than it has in football because of this. That's why you see Butler making it to back to back final fours. They have 21 year old guys that have played in a system for 3-4 years and don't have the attrition that the UNC's & Kentucky's do. Boise St & TCU have been the only exception to the rule in college football and that's because of superior coaching, not equal talent.

    Sin City Tider

  • Coach-Gomez said...

I'm just saying there are a LOT more better players now a days and talent alone will not win it for you.

You need the staff in place first. Look at Rutgers 20 years ago. How are they now?

BYU, Navy, Southern Methodist, Pitt, Yale won a bunch in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Fordham won a national title in '29 and was considered a powerhouse during those years. You could even include Miami on the list of has been powerhouses from recent memory who are barely average currently.

My point is... things change. Don't read too much into it.

ALOT more bowl games ALOT less schollys, big teams can't stock pile talent like they used to...that's a more better fact than yours!
