Why should a team in the SEC play a tough OOC

  • Also Bama went undefeated in 08 regular season SEC play and got MURDERED by Utah.

    Think about that situation.

Were going to the National Championship, got upset by Tebow, Utah has a month to prepare, Bama doesn't want to be there... perfect storm.

That's the point. The conference is so good that scheduling tough OOC opponents would be silly. We already play a tougher schedule than most teams in other conferences. Also, why does it matter when we play cupcakes? I don't understand the issue there. Either way, Bama plays a tough OOC opponent every year and then 3 cupcakes. I think that, on top of an SEC schedule, is plenty good enough.

Lastly, we beat the holy f*ck out of you 49-7 last time we played and it could've been 70-0 if we wanted it to be so in your face.

Look, Big Ten fans like me recognize that the SEC is the dominant football conference at the moment. The SEC has certainly earned that. But these things go through shifts all the time.

I just think it's good for fans and college football to avoid playing nobodies if you can. It's what my school's basketball team does -- always plays the toughest teams and gets stronger because of it.

The Alabama game showed that MSU is not yet ready. But because of the growing that occurred from that horror, MSU was better able to compete the next time it played an SEC opponent.

excuses...they still got STOMPED. Utah was the better team...they proved it on the field, not on some message board with somebody coming up with an excuse why they lost...Utah was better than Bama and thats a fact.

Since 2002, the SEC has done a great job of winning bowl games vs other conferences. According to College Football Data Ware House, the Big Ten is 12-13 vs. the SEC in that time span. The SEC just took that lead this year as they went 3-1 in the Citrus, Outback, Gator and Sugar Bowl, respectively. If you were listening to the media, you would think that the SEC would be undefeated in bowl season vs. every conference and in every game they play.

Unfortunately for southern football fans, that's not the case as we saw this season with Georgia losing to UCF.

Also LSU is like 4-4 vs Big ten I believe since BCS

Why does Michigan State have games lined up against Youngstown State and Jacksonville State. Neither are Division 1 schools.

Even when we suck AU is one of the toughest places to play in the country.

UGA v. FLA is an extremely hard hitting game.

You simply do not understand the amount of punishment their roster took in that stretch.

SEC had 2 Really good teams last yr and 1 decent and the rest of the conf was mediocre at best. UGA got pushed around in their own backyard by Boise.

It makes absolutely no sense for players to take a beating week in and week out in conference, then "Oh lets play Ohio State, that makes a ton of sense after we played UGA last week and have Alabama next week."

I thought Northern people were supposed to be smart.

Wow, at least you admit to being scared, an unwilling to compete.
Looks like you didn't play sports in college? It's amazing how scared some of you guys are.

Isn't the SEC often called the "best college football conference" -- if so, what is there to be afraid of scheduling schools people have actually heard of in the non-conference?

Like Eastern Michigan is a legit opponent....smh.

OSU pushed Arkansas around like little kids in that game...they got bored in the 2nd half and allowed ark to make it look legitimate...OSU was by far superior in every aspect of that game...Bigger,Faster,Stronger....Northwestern was better than Auburn in 08 but Auburn got break after break and intentionally hurt N.W.'s kicker to win the game...this is easy.

Do Michigan State and the Big Ten go around wildly proclaiming that we are the best and have always been the best? No.

The question was why should an SEC team play a tough OOC -- my answer is that they shouldn't be afraid to if they really are as good as they think they are and that it is good for the college game to do so.

That's true but the only thing that matters is this...do you believe the SEC is the best conference? If the answer is yes, which any rational person would say, then our point is made. We already play the toughest conference schedule out there, why schedule really tough OOC games too? And it's not like we don't schedule ANY tough OOC games. This year alone:

    Bama plays Michigan
    Auburn plays Clemson
    Ole Miss plays Texas
    Tennessee plays NC State
LSU plays Washington (and played Oregon and WVU last year, two BCS bowl winners and conference champs)
Mizzou plays Arizona State and Syracuse
Vandy plays Northwestern and Wake Forest
    Arkansas plays Rutgers
    Florida plays FSU
    USCe plays Clemson
    UGA plays Georgia Tech
    Kentucky plays Louisville

    Florida-mediocre
    Miss State-garbage
    Vandy-garbage
    UGA-mediocre
    South Carolina-Slightly above mediocre

Who said I played in college?

I guess when your conference schedule sucks as bad as USC's you accuse others of being scared.

No, we know we have far and away better players in this conference and don't need to prove it to anyone and kill ourselves in the process. That sounds like genius to me, not fear.

Exactly the response I wanted to hear. How many of us are in charge of making schedules? Zero. I think a lot of us would like to see our teams play better OOC schedules. With the new playoff system going in to affect, I think we may see some changes. Just remember, fans do not create schedules. So it's really a waste of time to argue over something none of us have control over.
