Why should a team in the SEC play a tough OOC

  • aumajorpain said...

    Think about that situation.

Were going to the National Championship, got upset by Tebow, Utah has a month to prepare, Bama doesn't want to be there... perfect storm.

    Next?

If UF was mediocre then what does that say about Ohio St? Got their asses kicked.

OSU was terrible last yr...I can admit that...worst season in over 70 yrs...Head coach fired, half the team suspended, and still lost by a td in Fl's backyard....UF needed 2 Special teams tds to beat that team as well....And got their ass kicked? hahahaha Thats not an ass kicking...Utah stomping bama was an ass kicking...

    SEC 2011 Alabama-Really Good LSU- Really good Arkansas-Good Auburn-mediocre Kentucky-garbage Ole Miss-Garbage Florida-mediocre Miss State-garbage Vandy-garbage UGA-mediocre South Carolina-Slightly above mediocre Tennessee-garbage

    Our only loses were too-

    Clemson- ACC champ
    Bama- National Champ
LSU- SEC Champ, #2 in the nation
Arkansas- If they didn't play LSU when they did, they would have finished #3.
    UGA- SEC East Champs.

So to be honest, I think Auburn is being seriously overlooked for next year.

  • Can someone show me an example of "good" OOC scheduling?

It's like people ignore the fact that you play Clemson, Va Tech, FSU, GT, Michigan, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Penn St, WVU, etc but because you play one DII opponent the big matchups no longer matter.

Confuses the hell out of me.

SEC had 2 more players drafted in the NFL than the B1G and the B1G had a down yr.

The b1g is always having a down year because they just aren't any good. Ever.

Look, Big Ten fans like me recognize that the SEC is the dominant football conference at the moment. The SEC has certainly earned that. But these things go through shifts all the time.

I just think it's good for fans and college football to avoid playing nobodies if you can. It's what my school's basketball team does -- always plays the toughest teams and gets stronger because of it.

The Alabama game showed that MSU is not yet ready. But because of the growing that occurred from that horror, MSU was better able to compete the next time it played an SEC opponent.

You can't compare football and basketball. In basketball, you can schedule really tough OOC games, lose a couple of them, and still wind up with a #1 seed in the tourney. If you schedule a really tough OOC football game and lose it, you likely have knocked yourself out of a national title opportunity. Last year, if Oregon doesn't play LSU in the opener then they would've had a lot better chance to play them in NOLA.

I agree with your first statement. These things are cyclical but the SEC has been the best conference for a while now and it doesn't look like that will change any time soon.

Lastly, I was just messing with you about the Capital One Bowl. Still, I think the fact that MSU played UGA instead of Alabama in the bowl game last year had a lot more to do with y'all winning as opposed to growing from the previous year's beatdown. UGA was a paper tiger that benefitted from a very easy schedule. They got beatdown by Boise and LSU and didn't beat a single decent team. Their best win was probably Auburn. They were the 4th best team in the league and they pissed away what should've been a win against the second best Big 10 team.

  • PAC 12 has some juggernauts on their schedules as well. South Carolina State, Southern Utah, Nicholls State, South Dakota State are all big time schools. Again, fans don't create schedules.

Since 2002, the SEC has done a great job of winning bowl games vs other conferences. According to College Football Data Ware House, the Big Ten is 12-13 vs. the SEC in that time span. The SEC just took that lead this year as they went 3-1 in the Citrus, Outback, Gator and Sugar Bowl, respectively. If you were listening to the media, you would think that the SEC would be undefeated in bowl season vs. every conference and in every game they play.

Unfortunately for southern football fans, that's not the case as we saw this season with Georgia losing to UCF.

Also LSU is like 4-4 vs Big ten I believe since BCS

Your exactly right on the money here. The games that have been played on the field, fail to show any one conference as dominate. The SEC system, picking the SEC team for the BCS is why people think the SEC is the best. The numbers prove otherwise.

The more the SEC plays good teams OOC, the more they get exposed and that's why they are scared and try to hide within their conference and rarely play road games.

UGA had to absolutely meltdown to lose to Michigan State last year. It was a sh*tting of the bed of epic proportions. Michigan State was essentially tied for your best team since they beat Wisconsin once and lost in the final minute to them the second time around.

That's how good your conference is...the best you had needed our "mediocre" 4th best team to trip all over themselves to squeak out a victory.

Because every time we play you we kill you. Your not worth missing out on a million dollar revenue game against some Patsy IMO.

Uh, sorry to interject here, but who is "we?"

When was the last time A&M beat an OOC BCS team? This is the first year you won't be Arkansas's token OOC BCS whipping boys, but now you're bragging about their success over you?

You could atleast wait until you play a down in the SEC before you start taking credit for LSU's victories.

Maybe so. Just pointing out that every conference has schools that play teams they have no business playing.

Even the lower tier Division 1 teams aren't worth bragging about playing.

Who said I played in college?

I guess when your conference schedule sucks as bad as USC's you accuse others of being scared.

No, we know we have far and away better players in this conference and don't need to prove it to anyone and kill ourselves in the process. That sounds like genius to me, not fear.

I'm saying that with that kind of attitude, you probably didn't. That's a loser's attitude, and it seems to be the SEC 's mentality. When your good, you are willing to take on anyone, anytime. The SEC should have several teams that take that approach, like USC does and most of the Pac does to a lesser degree, because the SEC has teams good enough to schedule with no fear. I see 1 or 2 teams that for the most part do. But, It's sad that that the others don't.

Funny how the Pac12 sucks as you say, but the Pac12 has been kicking the SEC's ass ever since the SEC created the BCS in 98.

So explain to me how that happens. For the past dozen years, with a good amount of games played (23-25)between the 2 conferences, and the SEC being the favorite in the match-up more often, please explain to me how the PAC still comes out on top against the SEC in wins and averages nearly 30 pts a game on your great SEC defenses?

Or just give some lame excuse, which seems to be the SEC's M.O. So many excuses..

That's the point. The conference is so good that scheduling tough OOC opponents would be silly. We already play a tougher schedule than most teams in other conferences. Also, why does it matter when we play cupcakes? I don't understand the issue there. Either way, Bama plays a tough OOC opponent every year and then 3 cupcakes. I think that, on top of an SEC schedule, is plenty good enough.

Lastly, we beat the holy f*ck out of you 49-7 last time we played and it could've been 70-0 if we wanted it to be so in your face.

    Lol in your face..

Schedule When our conference schedule is 10x better than anyone else's? Heck, GA Southern could beat Washington State.

I don't care who you play. All I know is I pay a small fortune every year for season tickets and a required seat license and additional donations. And I drive from Chicago to Ann Arbor for every game. I'm not doing that so I can watch Michigan beat up on EMU and Ball State and UMass. Give me some Alabama and Texas and, yes, Notre Dame. I want to see some football.

Its kind of pathetic when you hop on the SEC's coattails despite not playing a conference game yet and when you start bashing other conferences and claim how "WE always win" when TAMU has a terrible OOC and Bowl Game record against teams from other AQ conferences. But hey congrats on your Meinke Car Care win against the almighty Northwestern.
