    I haven't, but I'll check it out.

Did you read the Night Angel Trilogy, by Brent Weeks? Easily the best fantasy trilogy I've ever read.

I don't know if it's the best, but I liked them. Quick reads with nonstop action. I picked up his latest book, but haven't read it yet.

Lews was slightly stronger than Ishmael, who was/is the strongest Forsaken. I think Rahvin and Aginor were close.

Pretty sure Rand takes out that whole shadow-spawn army that's laying siege to Rodel Itulrade without any an/sangreal; his power level went through the roof after the end of the Gathering Storm.

I could be incorrect though; I started A Song of Ice and Fire after I finished the Towers of Midnight so it's been close to a year since I picked up the series.

Definitely a huge Wheel of Time fan. You are u correct! I believe Rand and Lews fused together into one being, when he was on top of Dragonmount. His power level has gone through roof. Can't wait for the Last Battle!!!!

I agree with you actually. The Shannara series was good but a little too simple IMO, I prefer epic stories.

The Chronicals of Thomas Covennant are pretty good. Gritty, but good.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Yeah, Glokta and Nicoma Cosca are pretty great. Read Heroes yet?

no do they make a return appearance there? Glokta was my favorite character by far but Cosca was awesome in Best Served Cold.

yeah - definitely debated on that being in the group but slightly decided against it. I have reread those several times since its such a fast paced read.

that was Tor right? I basically read anything by Tor because they pay for the best and brightest writers

seriously Death Gate Cycle is great. its pretty unlike anything else out there in my opinion.

very quick light reading - Vlad Taltos books - very short, great wit and humor in the writing, and a very likeable main character.

    should add to list:

kingdom of thorn and bone by Greg Keyes - thats good too.

I read the first series - I think it was like 4 books grouped together? - I liked it OK but would have it in the huge list of books below the ones I mentioned that I have read

HOWEVER I know most people would agree with you and not me.

Have you read any Sara Douglass books?

Unfortunately, they do not. It does have Black Dow in it who is a pretty fun character. Heroes is about a 3 day battle between the Northern barbarians and the Union. The irony of it is that none of the main characters are heroic and all in it for themselves. It's good, but I liked BSC better.

I was reading on his blog and Cosca will be in the next one and maybe even Logan Ninefingers. From Abercrombie's blog:

"Shy South comes home to her farm to find a blackened shell, her brother and sister stolen, and knows she’ll have to go back to bad old ways if she’s ever to see them again. She sets off in pursuit with only her cowardly old step-father Lamb for company. But it turns out he’s hiding a bloody past of his own. None bloodier. Their journey will take them across the lawless plains, to a frontier town gripped by gold fever, through feuds, duels, and massacres, high into unmapped mountains to a reckoning with ancient enemies, and force them into alliance with Nicomo Cosca, infamous soldier of fortune, a man no one should ever have to trust…”

I assume "none bloodier" = ninefingers

  • I can't believe this is even up for discussion? What's next, somebody brings Goodkind up for comparison?

Robert Jordan had a strong start to his series and he was to some degree a trendsetter and should be recognized for that. But even at his best WOT pales in comparison to ASOIAF. And after the first five books or so the series is anything but his best.

Sorry to hijack this thread but how would you guys compare The Dark Tower to these other two series?

Dark Tower is a bit of a different animal. Isn't in the classical fantasy vein like WOT or ASOIAF. I find I am not a fan of Stephen Kings writing style, his plots, especially in DT, seem to wonder aimlessly. The first three books flew by and kept turning the pages as fast as I could, at the same time I realized what a flawed work I was reading. This became more apparent while reading Wizard and Glass which was a self contained masterpiece and made me realize how much of a dissapointment the first three books had been.

    Completely disagree.

ASOIAF just gets boring to me honestly. The fact that everyone has serious flaws makes it that few characters are likeable and that makes the story less compelling for me.

Like I said in my other post I got so bored with A Dance with Dragons, I didn't even finish the whole thing. I've never come close to not finishing a Jordan/Sanderson book that I've started reading.

Honestly I think ASOIAF gets a lot more love than it should because of the show.

It was popular long before the show was ever aired.

We had a very long thread on it over on TMB before the show was even announced.

I am sure that it has gained more popularity now though.

I agree with a lot of your points. I still have mixed feeling about the series as a whole. At times it was masterful (Wizard and the Glass) and at times it was down right ridiculous (King writing himself into the book).

Still I really liked it overall. I realize it is different than the other books being mentioned I just wanted to get some opinions on it.

When reading Jordan I feel like i'm reading a cartoon, though an enjoyable one, while GRRM is real life. On that note reading Sanderson is like reading a videogame. WOT was so predictable, to the point where you knew when someone was about to tug their braid out. Every book for the first 5 books or so ended the same. Orphaned farmboy suddenly becomes powerful, it's a fun premise but it's been done a million times. Then of course it spiraled out of control as it got too bloated and the story came to a standstill. I blame the fact that he was married to his editor, he needed someone a little more detached that could tell him when to stop writing garbage.

GRRM left you guessing, had people throwing their books across the room. The people were flawed and felt real because of this. And i'm not the type that likes a book just because it's "gritty". Abercrombie bored me, using violence and detestable characters to cover up his lack of ideas.

First of all, if I wanted real life in my reading I would read historical novels.

Second, the people are too flawed in ASOIAF for me to care about them. And because I don't care about them, I don't care about the story.

I don't know, it's really just too realistic for me to be interested in it I guess. The few characters who are likeable always have terrible things happen to them and the douchebags almost always win- to the point where I feel it's UNrealistic. And it seems like everything is so stagnant in that every time the it looks like am important milestone in the war will be reached, Martin ruins it just to continue the chaos.

That's really it I think, I feel like in WoT there's always something going on that advances the main plot whereas I feel like I'm reading filler at times with Martin. There are subplots that have nothing to do with the main story and I don't care to read 30 pages about the kids having to scrounge for food or tramp their own way across the continent. Imparting that information could be done better when they rejoin the main plot at some point to become important again and you could spend 2-4 pages letting them tell their story.

I almost feel like Martin is filibustering me at times with ASOIAF, droning on and on about nothing to keep me buying.

  • I almost flunked out of high school 10 years ago the first time I read WOT. I'd stay up all night reading bc every chapter is a cliff hanger for the most part. WOT is definitely my favorite series of all time. Its a shame its way too long to ever really adapt to other mediums. Was very impressed with sandersons job so far as well.

Exactly, and while I enjoyed the first few books of ASOIAF, I never was in that 'cant put the book down' phase.

Martin drones on and Jordan doesn't? Jordan advances the story? Have you read past the first 5 or 6 books in WOT? It's nothing but subplots and revisiting the same conversations over and over. I guess if you are only talking about the first 6 books he keeps it together pretty well but when you have a whole book that you could probably skip and not miss anything then something is wrong.

As for not caring about the characters in ASOIAF, I guess to each his own but you don't throw a book across the room when something happens to a character you don't care about. I cared what happened to virtually every Stark and even some of the Lannisters.

  • personal opinion on WoT: first 5 or 6 books are fantastic. 7-11 were a complete drag. when Sanderson took over they are pretty good again.

GRRM books on average are probably better, but the first 5 or 6 in WoT to me are the best.

Also, GRRM in book #5 scares me that he is going the way of wheel of time. the pace slowed down to a crawl in that book.

Goodkind....haha don't get me started...I thought that was so promising when I read the first book and he kept it up for a while but wow did that series fall off a cliff. I never even read the final book.

I'd agree that they slow down after 6 and that 1-6 are probably the best, but I still enjoy them all and the latter books do a good job of catching some of the other main characters up in terms of development. Mat's character is certainly up there with the best and he has some great story arcs in those books.

I will say that jordan can harp on his characters mannerisms to death and really I guess he did in his case.

Also if the final book doesn't end superbly I will be crushed. Thats the problem with these mammoth series, I've got way too much time invested for it to end crappy.
