Women now allowed in combat jobs

  • USMCAG said...

I don't know how this is going to work out.

As a combat vet this is a bad idea. Can't imagine women being able to go without showering for 2/3 weeks at a time. Only women I saw that were in military were truck drivers and they would always have to swap out after 2 days at the most. Also opens up the "relationship" crap that has no place on the front line or in a platoon.

other good examples of a few of the many issues it would cause

good work boys, I think we helped gonig get it

I for one think some women could handle it, hell even better than some of the men I have seen who couldn't

But a women has no real place in combat, nor does the US military need them

The fact its even an issue with all the other problems going shows how retarded this country is getting at what seems to be every single level if its infrastructure

  • But realistically, are things going to change that much IYO? So it's going to be allowed - how many women would a) really want to do this; and b) pass the physical requirements.

Probably not, but like I touched on at the start

The moral would be the biggest problem, almost everybody would be bitching about it if it went into effect and that is the last thing they need on their minds right now iyam

Or those that are in harms way

I have 0 doubt some women could handle it. Just causes to many situations that have no place on the front line. As someone said you're dealing with 18/22 year old boys that are high strung and sexist. Heck the infantry platoon I was attached to created a "jack shack" for god sakes. roflmao

Would morale really be affected though if it went into effect, but there were no women around? If nothing changed at all in a particular unit (or group of soldiers [I apologize for not being aware of the correct military terminology]?)

Yes, think about my posting style

Then imagine people worse than me, in a war zone

There isn't much else to do in shitholes like afghanistan expect steady bitch about any and everything

No need to apologize either, its totally cool beans

Plus you seem to be forgetting that moral is already at rock bottom, so even the smallest of issues will send guys over that edge so to speak

If the Army gave women the ability to be on the front lines, from a PR standpoint they will make sure there are some on the front lines and there will be plenty of photo ops staged to make the Army looked good in the press. PR is an important part of fighting wars and if the Army gave the women the right to be on front lines, the will make sure they don't have to explain constantly to the press why there are hardly any given the opportunity to fight on the front lines.

I would expect the Army will lower the physical requirements enough to get at minimum 10% of the front line troops manned by women, which is one of the many reasons why this is a bad idea.

BTW, this is proposed by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta who is set to retire next month and it happens the Wed after President Obama is sworn in for a second term. I would expect the timing of this means that Obama wants this and had an retiring US Defense Secretary propose it who wouldn't be around for all of the issues that it would cause.

  • i just cant see a bunch of 18 to 20 year old girls crawling through the dirt and mud and firing Guns that probly weigh more than they do all while not having showered in 2 weeks. If i remember correctly those same girls were some of the most emotionally unstable people i have ever encountered. No way in hell this works.

Let's see: no equal rights for minorities, no equal rights for women, widespread discrimination against gays and lesbians, blacks were still getting lynched in the South, civil rights movement was barely in its infancy...yeah, that sounds like a real picnic.

Equal rights for women on the front lines of combat? Bad idea.

  • Don't agree with this at all... It's been proven that a guys head gets messed up even worse when he sees a female die, or get blown up.... Not to mention 9/10 aren't as strong as most guys, especially in a combat role....

There's a reason why females PT standards are lower than the males....

Cool. If a woman wants to be on the front lines, why shouldn't she have that opportunity?

I spent 20 years in the Marine Corps. All of it in the infantry. When we go into combat our combat load for each man is 120 pounds. That doesn't include your weapon. I don't know to many women that could carry that load in the mountains of Afganistan. But if they could I don't think we would of had a problem with it. The amount of women capable of performing under combat conditions is probably less than 1% of the female population.

    longhorn66

  • To me, this becomes a logistical problem. How do you fold women into forward operating positions? How do you adjust the practices that have been built over years that have been developed for males-only. How much will it cost? How much harder will it be to establish a forward operating post that addresses the needs of women? I'm suggesting that it would decrease the effectiveness and efficiency of our forces in vital ways. Plus, as has been mentioned in this thread, a group of males in combat becomes a pretty raw environment, with very little concern for "decency." Just my two pennies.
